Sam
Healing did not take as long as I expected...but considering I was some sort of hybrid I was happy that within a week my body had mended.
In the interlude of time, Neil spent most of his time near me. He said he wanted to make sure I didn't need any thing and to always be ready to help me. Unfortunately, in response, Ramsey spent most of his time not more than a few feet away from us. No matter where we went, he lurked in the shadows like a ghost, unheard and unseen unless he coughed or moved something.
Nick didn't have much to say about it all, not at first, but I could tell a lot just from his eyes...just from the way he looked at Neil and I.
We had become friends quickly, and despite our clashing personalities, we made it work. I could've easily considered us best friends after a week of near constant contact.
The way Nick looked at us had what I could call a kind of sorrow. The sorrow though, it wasn't for himself, it was for me. Nick had told me about Ramsey and Neil. I knew Ramsey would want to take Neil, who was newly 18, away. Neil was one of my only friends, and yet, this new pairing of his meant he would go to New York, my old home turf. A part of me craved to shove him in the cellar and lock the door to keep him safe. In my short time with him, Neil seemed fragile, yet already broken, and badly mended. He was 18, but frail of body and mind. He was a bit smaller than me, and he had no backbone, no confidence, no consciousness other than what I assumed was his wolf, who I had not seen or heard.
Nine days after I woke up, Neil and I walked into the dining room and we were met with the stern eyes of Nick and Ramsey.
Oh no. Winter drawled as if he rolled his eyes. What are they doing here? And together too?
"I didn't think they liked each other," I responded to Winter.
They don't! He agreed. This must be some sort of conspiracy.
"What do you mean?" I responded.
They have made some sort of deal. I felt as though I could see Winter cross his arms and tap his foot.
"Hello, Neil," Ramsey stood and took a step closer to us, breaking my conversation with Winter.
Neil at once grabbed my arm and shoved himself behind me.
"Neil," I cooed, trying to coax him out from behind me.
He and Ramsey were paired, or mated, it was true...but if Neil and I were badly matched friends, he and Ramsey were a badly matched mated pair. Neil covered in Ramsey's shadow 24/7. He had only a few select phrases he would say to alphas like Ramsey, so I worried for him as Ramsey craved his attention.
"Go on Neil," I gestured. "Say hi," I mouthed.
"H-Hi," he piped up, still behind me.
"Come and sit." Nick's voice was low and slow.
I knew at once something was about to happen as I heard Winter whimper a bit inside.
"Come on Neil," I led him to a set of chairs across from where Ramsey had been.
"How are you?" Ramsey smiled a bit at Neil who cowered like a chihuahua.
"I-I'm fine..."Neil turned away, not wanting to look at Ramsey.
"Neil," Nick used his alpha tone and I at once felt my hair stand up.
Winter whimpered again inside and it was as if I could see him rushing to hide in a tunnel.
"Alpha," Neil whined and kept his head turned down.
"Ramsey is your mate, are you aware of this?" Nick asked an obvious question, still in his alpha tone to ensure that Neil would answer.
"Yes, Alpha." His voice cracked in fear.
"You cannot abandon your mate," Nick continued, "it's one of our most absolute laws."
It is? Winter's small voice sounded as Nick continued.
"It is your duty to join your mate, and be his partner in life and leadership."
"Yes, Alpha," Neil began to shiver in his chair. I could see him picking at his nails.
"You must join Ramsey, Neil." He continued.
This feels so wrong... Winter's voice cracked as I sat in disbelief at the situation before me. What kind of law is this?
"I thought you knew all the laws." I reproached him.
Says who? Winter's voice raised a bit in shock.
"Said you," I responded swiftly.
Don't be a bitch. He spat suddenly.
"But..." Neil tried to protest, drawing my attention back. His eyes shot up and met Nick's for only a moment before they fell back down to the ground.
"You are an omega?" Ramsey asked Neil.
"Yes, Alpha." Neil responded to him as if he was a robot with one speech setting.
"My name is Ramsey," Ramsey reached across the table and tried to touch Neil.
"Ah!" Neil panicked and fell back in his chair.
Oh goddess! Winter cried as Neil crashed to the floor. He was like a baby who could barely walk without their hands being held.
"Neil!" I rushed and helped him up.
"I-I! I'm sorry!" He cried suddenly, his hands gripping onto himself as I pulled him up.
"No no!" Ramsey stood, dwarfing him, "it's okay."
"Does he have to go?" I asked before thinking.
"Yes," Nick and Ramsey answered at the same time.
"But why?" I hugged Neil close as he shuddered and tears started to stream down his face.
"It's is our way," Nick sounded out, stoic as usual.
"It's safer," Ramsey interrupted me before I could speak. "Who knows what could happen here since the stuff with your mother..." he turned his eyes to the side, trying to avoid the topic while also using the situation I had ignored to his advantage, "a woman like your mom won't forget what was done to her here...and I don't want Neil here for that."
He has a point... Winter sighed.
"But-," I tried to protest.
"Sam," Nick cut me off, standing and coming near me.
"Wait a second," I held onto Neil and he to me.
"No," Nick grabbed onto my waist and yanked me up and away from Neil.
"Hey!" I cried.
At once Ramsey scooped up Neil and he shouted in a mix of fear and sadness.
"Nick! Stop it!" I beat on his arm. "Let me down!" I cried as I watched Ramsey carry Neil out of the room. "Let me down! He's my friend! He needs me!"
"I need you too," Nick sounded from behind me, "it's better if he's not here for your mother's revenge...we don't know what will happen."
"But he's!" I tried again to protest.
"This is the only way he will grow." Nick added.
I beat on his arm for only a moment more as Neil and Ramsey vanished from view.
"Now that they are gone," Nick kissed my forehead. "Look at this," he pressed an envelope into my hand.
On the front were the words,
NAGSAM.
"What is NAGSAM?" I raised an eyebrow.
"The National Group of Scientists Against Mating," he responded.
"Why are you giving me this?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Open it." He pressed forward and I yanked open the top.
My heart dropped and my breath hitched as I pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it.
In big bold letters it said my name, below it had a picture, and then below the pictured it had the words "REWARD FOR CAPURE. DEAD OR ALIVE."
