*~*~*~*The King’s POV*~*~*~*
I paced in my bedroom. This was unthinkable. Unimaginable. Undoable!
“You must at least hear them out.” My wife said. She was seated at an easel by the window, painting.
“I have. At first I was outraged, simply because I haven’t had any time with her, and now she wants me to hand her off to this young man who I hardly know. And a servant, at that!” I exclaimed.
She rose and walked over to me, putting her arms around my waist. “Do you remember how we felt when we were their age? How wonderful young love feels?”
I smiled at the memory. “Of course.”
“That’s what they’re experiencing. And you don’t want to be the person she will remember as spoiling it, now do you?”
“No, of course not! I just….I just want what is best for her, and I can’t see how a servant meets her standard.”
“Not her standard, dear, yours. She is perfectly fine with his status, and quite frankly so am I.”
I turned to look at her, amazed that she would say such a thing. “But he’s a servant!”
“And? What if I had been a servant, would you have given up on our love?”
“Exactly. It’s the same with them, dear. You must find a legal way for them to be together.” She smiled, then kissed me.
I waited in my room. The longest three hours of my life. I thought the worst waiting was waiting for my wedding with Baylan, but no, this was far worse.
That had been waiting for something to definitely happen, whereas this was waiting for something to maybe happen. It was emotional agony. The thought of not being with Ryan actually physically hurt.
We were talking telepathically, to fill the time. He had explained to me everything I had missed, from Baylan’s murder to our return home.
Finally…finally my dad came for me.
“Come along, Elandra. We’re meeting in the gardens.”
I followed him, half hopeful and half afraid our of my mind. This was it. My future was about to be decided.
We arrived at the gardens and met my mom, Duckie, Manera, and Ryan, and a few other adults I had never seen before. They looked official though. Was that a good sign?
“We’re here to discuss the possibility of revoking a law of the constitution.” The King said. “It will come down to a majority vote. Under the laws of our kingdom, the King has the power to revoke certain laws if the need arises.
Up until now, there has been no need. Raynald, will you please tell us why we should revoke the law for you and Elandra?”
Ryan stood shakily, still recovering. “Your Majesties, I wish you to revoke this law so that Princess and Elandra and I may be married. The simply truth is that I love her, and she loves me in return. We cannot imagine life without each other, and we wish to spend our lives together.”
“If I may?” Duckie asked as he stood up. The King nodded. “You Majesties, there is one other factor that has failed to be mentioned. Raynald and Elandra share the connection.”
The official looking people started murmuring and whispering to each other. What was ‘the connection’? The telepathic one we share?
“Is this true?” The Queen asked me.
“Well, we can hear each other in out heads, and talk to each other telepathically, is that what you mean?”
She smiled. “Yes. That connection is all the proof we need, in my opinion.”
“Why so?” I asked.
”The connection,” Explained Duckie. “Is only between two people who are truly meant for each other. Soul mates. And our laws state that soul mates may be allowed to marry, no matter their social statuses.”
I felt my stomach fill with butterflies. “So, does that mean….”
“Not quite yet. There is one official bit of business that needs attending. I was planning this as a way to bend around the law, but even though we no longer require it, I think it a fitting reward.” He smiled. “But I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait until the night of the ball.”
I sighed. Figures.
I sat in one of the many living rooms with my family, Duckie, Manera, and Ryan. We weren’t allowed to officially be together, although it was pretty much finalized between the family. We sat holding hands, talking with them.
“What about your old life?” Briana asked me. “Will you miss it?”
I stopped, shocked. How could I have forgotten??
“Oh my gods….” I said. “My old mom and dad! They will have gone insane worrying about me!! Can I go visit them? Please?”
My dad raised his eyebrows. “I suppose…Better yet, why not bring them here for the ball?”
“Can they get here? They’re not mermaids, they’re humans.”
“We have transportation available, now that we’ve regained control of the portal. You need to take Ryan and Duckie with you, though.”
“Yes!” I smiled and hugged Ryan. “Sounds like another road trip, huh?” I teased.
“Maybe this time we can go somewhere and now have attempts on our lives this time.” He teased back.
I sighed. “You can do this.” Ryan encouraged me. He sat beside me in the rental car. We were parked across from my old house.
“I just feel so horrible for putting them through all this…”
“It wasn’t your fault, babe.”
“I know, but still…”
“C’mon, let’s get this done.” He opened the door, and I did the same.
I walked across the street, looking up at my old bedroom window as I went. I remembered looking down at where the car is now and seeing Ryan, thinking he was a creeper for stalking me.
I stood on the front porch, and took a deep breath. Raising my arm to push the door bell felt like an effort, I was so nervous!
I heard them walking to the door…fiddling with the lock…turning the handle…
She stood there, staring at me, unable to speak.
“Hi, mom. I’m home.”
She grabbed me and pulled me into a tight hug. I hugged her back, both of us crying.
After a few moments, she pulled away. “Are you alright?! Where have you been??”
I laughed. “It’s a loooong story. You probably won’t believe me. Oh, this is my boyfriend, Ryan.” He motioned to Ryan, who was standing at the bottom of the steps.
“Boyfriend? I see. Well…..uh….come in, Ryan. Ellie, I hope you have a good explanation for this whole disappearance.”
“Oh trust me,” I said, smiling. “I do.”
