Chapter 6

St. Paul Hotel, Old Port Montreal

Voss had given up on sleep around three in the morning and had pulled out his laptop in bed to go over some of Sam's notes for the interview. While he tried to sleep, all his brain would do was replay the time he'd spent with Lou. Natural beauty and charm, she was strong and delicate, leaving him no doubt that the girl that made him garlic bread was the same girl that shot dead three men point blank in self-defence; two very contradictory skills to say the least. Clearly smart and sharp with her tongue, he was sure that he could sit in the same room with her for days and never be bored or want to leave.

That thought led him to realize what a shit-of-a-boyfriend he was to Veronica. After seeing the heart felt pain of Lou losing the man she loved, Voss had started to wonder if he'd ever felt that kind of love for anyone, other than his siblings.

He'd realized far too late, that something had always been missing; passion and an honest sense of vulnerability had always been lacking from his relationship with Veronica and he never understood how much he'd been missing...until Lou.

With the skills of Professor Xavier, able to read his mind from four-thousand miles away, his iPhone rang. Caller ID, V.

"Hey, Veronica."

"Baby, how are you? I've been so worried about you." Veronica was sounding a little pecked. For sure she'd been drinking, most likely just walked in after clubbing...which would make it 1 am pacific time.

"Everything is good. What's wrong?"

"You mean you don't already know? Don't they have at least one television in Canada? TMZ online has footage of you leaving that woman's home a few hours ago, after you spent the entire day consoling the grieving slut that had her husband's head blown off to get your attention." Veronica spat out.

"And your point is?" My teeth were clenched. Best punishment for a narcissistic bitch was to not bite and give her plenty of rope to hang herself. "Since when do we pay attention to each others social calendars."

"Voss, what am I supposed to say to people? Everyone is talking about it and is worried about you, everyone thinks that this is fucked up. When are you coming home?" Veronica asked in a pleading tone; one that would fool most people as genuine.

"Tell your mother to read a book and stop following the goddamn rags for a change. No one with half a brain would believe anything is wrong with me, accompanied by my family, visiting a widow in mourning. If a person would jump to such a conclusion, that person would be a fucking heartless bitch. Tell you mother I say hello by the way." He saw her narcissist whining and raised her his condescending sarcasm.

"Voss this is ridiculous. Cut that woman a cheque and come back to me. This is so unfair how you're treating me. Dr. Jakala says it's abandonment and you know I have issues with that. I have sacrificed my entire career to please you, Voss, and all I get from you is a seat at the governor's ball once a year." Veronica tried very hard to follow that with fake crying into the phone.

"Your career was on hiatus long before we started seeing each other, but I couldn't agree with you more, Veronica, you are unhappy and feel that this relationship has run its course. If you feel that you have been treated unfairly, I agree that it would be best for you and your career to move on and find someone who can give you the attention you feel you require."

"That is not what I said, Voss! Stop putting words in my mouth."

He continued on, ignoring her interruption. "I wish you well. You can leave your key with Carmen. I hope your Crucifixion III premiere goes well for you. Good-bye, Veronica."
