Jane gazed at her reflection, marvelling at the results of her new maid's deft handiwork. Her hair was styled into a chignon, with soft tendrils framing her face. Her blue gown, a masterpiece from Madame Roseanne, was a sight to behold. The bodice was adorned with a rose embroidery, and delicate gold lace trim highlighted the high basque waistline. The skirt billowed gracefully around her, its flowing fabric glimmering in the light.Jane lifted her gloved hands to her face, lightly touching her cheeks. The dark kohl around her eyes made them bold, while a hint of rouge enhanced the natural blush on her cheeks. She smiled at her reflection, satisfied with the transformation. As she adjusted a loose curl that had escaped from her chignon, she promised to thank Madame Roseanne once more for the perfect gown.
Entering the drawing room, where her father waited, she curtsied.
"You look beautiful, my dear," Lord Hadley said, setting aside the newsletter he had been reading.
"Thank you, my Lord," she replied with a gracious nod.
"This is your first introduction to society," he continued. "Remember all your lessons and make me proud."
Jane bit back a sigh. It was always about his reputation. The lessons on proper lady-like behaviour had been relentless, though Jane had excelled in most areas-except perhaps her pianoforte lessons.
"I've arranged a grand ball to announce your return as a lord's daughter," Lord Hadley said, his eyes gleaming with pride. "You will be the talk of the town."
As a prominent lord, Hadley spared no expense on his events. Jane was relieved when Mr. Walter, their butler, announced that her carriage had arrived. After a final reminder from her father about her curfew, Jane assured him she would be back before the hour was late.
Stepping out of the carriage at the Albright's mansion, Jane was taken aback by the estate. The mansion was illuminated with countless candles, their glow spilling out from large windows and casting a warm light over the gathering. Inside, the great hall was a bustling spectacle of colour and movement. Women in gowns of every imaginable hue mixed, their hair adorned with feathers and ribbons, while men in tailored evening coats and cravats exchanged lively conversation.
Jane entered the hall, immediately struck by the opulence of the event. A lavish spread of delicacies was laid out, from pastries to proper meals. She picked up a piece of cheesecake and took a bite, savouring the creamy sweetness.
"Jane!" Emily's excited voice reached her.
Emily, in a lovely pink dress with frilled sleeves rushed to embrace her.
"I'm so glad you could make it," she said, her eyes shining with joy.
"You look beautiful, Emily," Jane said, returning the smile.
"Not as beautiful as you," Emily winked. " Come, the dance is about to begin."
Jane allowed Emily to lead her away from the food. As they moved through the crowd, a manservant passed with a tray of wine. Jane accepted a glass with a grateful nod.
"Lady Alice looks particularly lovely tonight, don't you think?" Jane remarked, gesturing towards the lady of the evening.
"Yes, she does," Emily agreed. "Rumour has it she's engaged to the Earl of Ravenscroft."
Jane furrowed her brow, sceptical.
"We don't know if that's true though," Emily said, turning to her. "Do you know how to dance?"
Jane's eyes sparkled with excitement. "I do."
