CHAPTER NINE
Ten years later, Lillian who was popularly known as Lucinda Vanderpuye was admitted to College. She owed Verissah a very great gratitude, because Verissah treated her as her own biological daughter. Lillian felt extremely okay. However, she never forgot the reason why she left her home. She wanted to repay his father and Vera for killing her mother and most especially Susan. After so many years she just couldn't get over everything that had happened. Lillian thought about how his father had done all those without regret, “My father didn't even bother to look for me. He didn't even show remorse for what he had done and in return for me telling him the truth he slapped me!! He will pay very dearly for murdering Susan my only source of laughter”.
Afterwards, Lillian slept off. The following day, she wored a white long dress and prepared for college. Afterwards, she went to have breakfast. Lillian couldn't wait to get to the college. When she reached the college it was so crowded that one could hardly take a step. After the compounds were at ease Lillian decided to take a stroll around the college since it was her first day in college. As Lillian wandered around, someone from nowhere in a rush bumped into her and spilled red wine on her white clothe. Lillian was totally soiled in anger and she said aloud as the person rushed away, “Don't you have any manners to at least to say the word sorry.Ahh damnit”. Lillian just couldn't do anything about it so she went for lectures like that. The first person to make fun of her was Serafina. She claims that she is the brightest student in the class. Lillian didn't even mind her, she just took her seat. No sooner, the boy who had spilled the wine on her attire arrived and Lillian kept her focus on him with the intention of showing him a great lesson.
After lectures Lillian spent her time in the library. She quickly lost check of time and no sooner it was too late. She packed her belongings and went to the road to get a cab. All she saw was a cab driving very fast towards her, she jumped to the other corner of the road however it was too late.
CHAPTER TEN
“Are you okay?” Someone from behind said softly. Lillian wiped her brows and attempted to rise up, but a strong pain from her back refrained her. She opened her eyes to look at the person beside her and asked, “What is wrong with me?,Who are you?”. The person spoke out, “You had an accident and I brought home a doctor to take care of you. Now you are fine but you cannot go home now”. Lillian struggled up and saw that it was the same boy who had spilled the wine on her. Before Lillian could utter a word, he said solemnly, “ I am sorry for spilling the wine on you I wanted to apologize but I was in a haste”. Lillian grinned and nodded. He continued, “I am Livingston Anderson what about you?”. “ I am Lucinda Vanderpuye” Lillian responded. Livingston said, “I guess we are cool now, can we be friends? At least our families are friends”. Lillian nodded.
Livingston and Lillian talked and chuckled deep into the night. Suddenly, Lillian's face changed and asked, “Livingston, I hope my mother does not know about my condition? You told me that you called her and that I can stay here as long as I am not okay”. Livingston confessed, “The truth is that I actually told her, she was very worried but she said that you can stay here and be fine”. Lillian suggested, “ Then I will leave tomorrow. But know one thing I am highly disappointed in you”. Lillian frowned and questioned, “ But where are your parents? I have not seen them”. “They have went on vacation they will come tomorrow” Livingston responded. “And that reminds me, you said you liked homemade pizza right? My mother will come tomorrow so she will prepare some since is also my favorite. So what do you say?” Livingston chuckled. Lillian exclaimed, “Really? Then I am in. My mother does not like pizza so I can't possibly tell her I am going to have one”. Livingston shrugged, “You shouldn't worry, I will come and pick you up after lectures in the afternoon”. Lillian smiled and nodded
The following day, Lillian left even before the Andersons came home.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
“Lucinda, why are you in a rush this morning? Wait I will go and drop you off just continue with your breakfast” that was Verissah in a concerned tone. Lillian shouted as she put in her books into her bag, “Mother, today I have to go early. I have to finish my project this morning in school, so that I can go and have lunch”. Verissah asked inquisitively, “Which lunch?”. Lillian exclaimed, “Oh, sorry I forgot to tell you. Today, Livingston will come and pick me up to have lunch at his house after lectures”. Verissah frowned, “And you didn't even try to see my opinion about that. By the way, you will go nowhere”. Lillian retorted, “Mother, you didn't even bother about asking which Livingston I am talking about. I am going to the Andersons, they are your friends so I don't think you should worry”. Verissah agreed, “ Okay, since it is the Andersons you can go. But please take good care of yourself. When will you come home after lunch? Should I let the driver come and pick you up?”.“No mother, I will not stay there for a long time and moreover their driver will bring me home. I am late bye bye !!!”Lillian retorted and dashed out of the house.
Lillian asked one of Verissah's drivers to take her to college. No sooner, Lillian was in college. Livingston was the first to meet Lillian. He alerted Lillian“Lucinda, remember the lunch”. Lillian chuckled and responded, “I do remember”. Livingston escorted Lillian to class. After lectures Lillian dashed out of the class and at the entrance stood Livingston who called his driver and they sped away.
CHAPTER TWELVE
When Lillian reached the house, Livingston searched her face to see how impressed she was however Lillian looked puzzled. Lillian thought, “How come? This is the same house I ran away from, my father's house. Maybe my father has sold it to Livingston's parents”. Lillian upon knowing that Livingston had sensed her frustration gave in and chuckled, “Wow, your house is luxurious”. Lillian gave an impressive look and Livingston knew that he had won this game of impression. But little did Livingston know that Lillian once stayed in that house. As they both laughed and started to walk into the house, Livingston's younger brother walked towards Lillian and welcomed her. Livingston then introduced his brother, “Lucinda, this is my younger brother Oliver he is in a different college”. Oliver handed his hand over for a hand shake and smiled.
Then they proceeded to enter the house. Lillian was also welcomed by a woman, who looked very familiar, “Oh no!!!it is Vera” Lillian examined silently. Lillian wished that she was mistaken. However, the woman stretched her hand to Lillian “I am Vera Anderson” she smiled. Lillian also smiled and hid her devastation. Lillian thought, “I still have hope. Maybe it is just a mere resemblance”. When Lillian muttered this, what she saw next caused her to wish that the earth would open such that she would enter, “It is my father!!!! That murderer” Lillian muttered. No sooner, a man stretched his hand over to welcome Lillian and chuckled, “I am Mr. Virgil Anderson” and he smiled. Lillian couldn't hold her fear, she shivered. When Livingston noticed this, Lillian intentionally coughed and before she could even demand for water it was before her. She drank and thought, “What if my father identifies me. No I can't risk that, but there is nothing I can do. Let me just hope I am not recognized. I just can't stand Vera and Virgil I hate them, and I am determined to kill them. I promise”. After, Lillian muttered a ‘thank you' and she was led to her seat by the dinning table. She muttered to Livingston, “Are these your parents?”. Livingston muttered back, “I thought you would never ask. They are not my parents. My parents died recently so the Andersons are acting as Oliver and I’s custodians”. Lillian sighed relieved because she didn't want to hurt Livingston.Everyone began to eat, and Lillian was worried because she was afraid to be recognized until Virgil questioned, “Lucinda, I hope that your mother is fine. We have totally missed her”. Lillian was relieved then and she answered, “Sir actually she has been busy nowadays that is why. I will send your regards to her”. Virgil then chuckled and continued with his food. Lillian was totally furious and was happy to have gotten access to Virgil and Vera. She really wanted to repay them all.
Later, Lillian bid the Andersons ‘Good bye’ and Livingston dropped her off. Livingston also noticed her change in mood after meeting Mr. Virgil and Mrs.Vera. He dared not question her because he knew how Lillian's anger was and that did not matter at the moment.
CHAPTER TWELVE
Lillian couldn't sleep that whole day. She thought, “How can Susan and my mother be dead while the real murderers are alive. No way, God naturally brought me closer to them so that I can repay them the same way”. The following day, when Lillian went to college. Her lecturer Miss Ribenisia lectured that, “When you really want to repay someone take the most important thing in their life. Probably what they took from you”. When Lillian heard this, she was all ears. No sooner, Livingston came and called Lillian out of the class. As soon as Lillian left, Miss Ribenisia made her point, “This does not mean that you should repay them. Just prove to them that you are strong and let it go”. However Lillian who was outside heard non of the point Miss Ribenisia made, so Lillian thought, “Now I know how to repay those murderers!!!”.
When Lillian reached home she talked less and hurried into her room to make preparations of her plan.
Lillian found it very hard to proceed with her plan, she felt like what she was about to do was wrong. However, when Lillian thought of how Susan died and everything Susan had told her she felt determined to repay them.
Then in order for Lillian to complete her task she had to get closer to Livingston.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
The following day in college, Lillian forced a smile at Livingston as she said, “I have missed Vera's pizza can I accompany you home to have some?”. Livingston exclaimed, “I will be so happy for you to have lunch with my family, why not? You have the permission”. As they kept conversing, Lillian noticed that Serafina kept her eyes fixed on them. Lillian signalled Livingston and they moved away from her view. Yet still, Lillian felt like something was wrong.
After lectures when Lillian was ready to go with Livingston, she felt a tap on her shoulder and to her amazement it was Serafina. Serafina smiled back as she noticed Lillian's amazement. She then spluttered out, “Lucinda, I know you are surprised to see me. I apologize for acting so cruel to you”. Lillian felt glad and also said, “Serafina I have forgiven you already. I thank God that we are on talking terms now”. Serafina chuckled, “Lucinda not just that, I want us to be friends”. Lillian exclaimed, “Really, I will be excited to have you as my friend”. “My friends and I are having a small party in the college, come and let's have some fun” that was Serafina. Lillian sighed and responded, “Sorry Serafina, actually I will be going somewhere with Livingston now. Am just waiting for him to come”. Serafina retorted, “Don't worry Lucinda it won't take you even five minutes. I want to introduce you to my friends as my best friend”. Lillian was convinced and she agreed. Little did Lillian know that it was all a trick to lure her to her death.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Lillian then followed Serafina and they were soon out of sight. “We have been walking for long now, I recall you saying that the party was in the college but here is the store room” Lillian whispered. Serafina objected, “Lillian don't worry we are almost there. Give me your bag and let's go inside the store room”. As soon as they entered, Serafina told Lillian that she was going to ease herself and she went out with the bag.
When Lillian had waited for minutes and Serafina had not returned she attempted to get out. However the door was locked. No sooner, gases from nowhere filled the room and Lillian became unable to breath. She bang the door for hours and no one came.
Meanwhile, Livingston who had been waiting for ages kept his eyes fixed on the entrance of the college for any sign of Lillian.
Some time later, Livingston spotted Serafina and her friends as they spoke and chuckled as they left the college. Livingston upon knowing that they were the last people leaving the college went to them and questioned, “Have any of you seen Lucinda?”. They all chorused, “No”. Serafina continued, “What makes you think I know the whereabout of Lucinda. It is obvious that she does not want to leave with you”. They all laughed and strolled away. Livingston became stranded and started to search for Lillian but to no avail. When Livingston was about to give up he felt like he should check the locked store room. With his might he broke the door and to his amazement he saw Lillian lying down unconscious.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Livingston rushed Lillian to the hospital. The doctors confirmed that she had inhaled bad gases into her body system. “Serafina tricked me into going into the store room and she locked me up. All I saw again was smoke and I fainted” Lillian spluttered out to Verissah and Livingston. Livingston alarmed her, “But when I asked them they said they had not seen you. So that means that Serafina intentionally did that to you. You won't believe how I found you and brought you here”. Verissah enthused, “Livingston I owe you my gratitude. Thank you so much”. Lillian also spluttered, “I thank you Livingston”. When Lillian was sent back home, she lied on her bed and pictured everything and all her intentions and whispered as she thought, “No I cannot do that to Livingston.I cannot kill them as they murdered my family. But Susan and Rose need vengeance. More so, Livingston is not related to Virgil and Vera.” Lillian shrugged, “He is just an adopted son”. Lillian lied there and regardless of her thoughts she felt obliged to murder Virgil and Vera. The next day Lillian proceeded with the initial beginning of her attack.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
“Where is it? You told me to come for it now”Lillian whispered. “Yes,it is here” the merchant said. Lillian sighed as she used a handkerchief to take the gun. Lillian recalled how she sneaked out of the house. First, Lillian screamed that she had hurt her arm and Verissah came running to her. Verissah massaged her arm for her and Lillian placed her request to sleep. As soon as Verissah left her to sleep she slipped out of the window and out of the house. “Miss, what are you thinking about? Anyways give me my money” the merchant shrugged. “Here take it”Lillian offered. No sooner, Lillian dashed out of the darkness and in no time she was on her bed. Lillian put the gun underneath her bed and was fast asleep.
The following morning, Lillian slipped the gun into her pocket and she headed for college. Lillian waved at Livingston in class and galloped to him, “Livingston can I come to your house for lunch today?”. “Of course yes you can come. You are always welcome to my house” Livingston enthused. Right after lectures Lillian jumped into Livingston's car and they drove out of sight.
When Lillian and Livingston reached the house, they were welcomed as usual. Some time later lunch was served and as soon as Lillian finished her meal she began with her plan. “Please may I visit the washroom?” Lillian requested. “You can go” everyone chorused.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
“Madam!! Sir!! It is Lucinda!! She has fainted at the entrance of the kitchen” the maid shouted. Everyone in a haste went to Lillian and Livingston carried her to the guest room. Livingston called a doctor to come and take care of Lillian. Upon examination, the doctor who did not know what was wrong with Lillian claimed that Lillian fainted from fatigue. When Lillian regained consciousness the Andersons couldn't let her go because she looked tired. So they called Verissah who allowed Lillian to stay there till the following day.
Everyone left Lillian's room, and she was overjoyed to have been able to accomplish the first face of her attack. Lillian set her alarm at two and slept.
Few hours, the alarm rang and Lillian woke up. She smiled at the gun as she pulled it from her pocket. She glanced at the picture sent to her by Livingston when she asked of the structure of the house.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Lillian tried harder and identified the room of Virgil and Vera. She took the gun and tip toed along and no sooner she was at the master bedroom. Lillian sneaked into the room and pulled out her gun. Lillian noticed that Vera was not in the room. She searched all the sections of the room and found no trace of her. As Lillian was about to shoot. Virgil woke up and to his amazement found Lillian whom he knew as Lucinda with a gun in front of him. He panicked, “Lucinda what are you doing here by this time. Why are you holding a gun?”. Lillian laughed and tears flowed as she said, “You don't even remember your own daughter. Anyways, I came here to end what you started. By killing you”. “So you are Lillian?” Virgil whispered. “Let me explain all your iniquities to you if you have forgotten. You murdered my mother, and killing Susan was the worst of it all. So I guess you know what you deserve already” Lillian chuckled. Virgil pleaded, “Lillian please, please don't do this”. Lillian regardless of the pleadings of Virgil pulled her gun out and shot Virgil.
When Lillian was about to escape, she stumbled upon something which drew her attention. It had a writing, “To my dear Lillian”.
CHAPTER NINETEEN
Lillian bowed down and picked it up. It was a diary. Lillian wondered, “How can a diary be having my name on it”. This compelled Lillian to read it. Lillian sat on the bare floor and started to read, “Lillian If you are reading this book.I want to tell you that I love you very much despite all of what I am going to say. Actually, Lillian you are not my biological child. I adopted you when your mother Rose died. I didn't question you when you called me a murderer because your father tried to poison me and the drink was exchanged and he died. So I assume I killed him. Also, Susan committed suicide because she didn't want you to feel betrayed by her. You will ask yourself why Susan told you all those lies and why Vera also hates you. Rose always accused me to be the cause of your father's death and when I adopted you she became so furious so on her dying bed she told Susan everything she wanted you to think of me .Vera was also furious that I adopted you despite how your father almost killed me. Vera never trusted you she promised me that you will one day betray me, I told her you will never do that”. Lillian couldn't control her tears she told herself as she shivered, “These are all lies. Yes they are lies I did the right thing. Yes I did”. Lillian continued to read, anxiously , “I know Lillian you will not believe me. The only proof I have is at the back of your mother's picture frame hidden underneath my bed however someone took it ”. Lillian recalled that she stole a picture from underneath her father's bed when she was young. Lillian searched her pocket because she remembered that she placed it in her pocket before she went to college. Lillian pulled the picture out and to her amazement there was a hole at the back of the picture and inside was a paper inside. When Lillian pulled it out it was a DNA test which proved that she was not the biological daughter of Virgil. That proved it all that all Susan said was all lies. That was not all, there was a pen drive inside.
CHAPTER TWENTY
Lillian quickly inserted the pen drive inside a decoder nearby. There appeared Susan, who was about to commit suicide and she was surprised to see Susan taking a knife to kill herself and saying, “Lillian, I made this to tell you that I committed suicide and Virgil has no hand in this. I just couldn't stand telling you the truth, Virgil is such a good person. Virgil promised me that he will tell you everything. Everything Virgil says is the truth”. Lillian bowed down in sorrow and mourn till tears came no more. Then Lillian realized that she could still fix everything, if only she would be able to save Virgil.Lillian left the diary on the floor and dashed out of her room to the hall. Lillian kept on saying as she was looking for the first aid box, “Virgil please don't die. Please forgive me I became so ungrateful to you. Please don't die”. Before Lillian could find the first aid box someone from upstairs wailed and said, “Virgil is dead!!!!? No!!!”. Lillian soon identified that voice it was Vera. Tears started to flow and Lillian knelt down and with head bent cried her soul out. Some time later, everyone hurried into Virgil's room with the exception of Lillian who was still kneeling down crying. Later, Livingston carried lifeless Virgil into his car and they drove off.
PART THREE
CHAPTER TWENTY- ONE
Lillian wasted no time, she packed her belongings and was soon out of the house. In the morning when the Andersons had returned they searched everywhere and found no trail of Lillian. Livingston was very worried so he called Verissah who claimed that Lillian had come home.
Lillian sat on her bed and kept staring at the clock. Lillian whispered as tears flowed, “Why did I do that? I am so heartless. I thought it was Virgil that was heartless but it was rather me. But no one must find out this truth yes. I will just try and act normally. Let me just put the gun under the bed, I will throw it away yes”. Just as Lillian put the gun under the bed, something struck her, “Did I put on gloves before I shot Virgil? No . Oh no!!!! Why didn't I remember. But no one knows it was me so I can hide”. Lillian cleaned her tears.
“Why did you come home without telling the Andersons they were very worried” that was Verissah. “Virgil died at the mid night so I - I was scared so I ran and came home. Trust me, trust me mother”. As Lillian said this she bursted into tears and shivered like never before. Verissah had never seen Lillian that way before so as she cuddled her she said, “I trust you my dear Lucinda, I trust you”.
Verissah was worried sick about Lillian's reaction. She told herself, “Virgil was shot that time Lucinda came home. There is no relationship between Lucinda and Virgil that will cause Lucinda to be so affected by his death”. Verissah became confused and she decided to do some laundry so that she would worry no more.
CHAPTER TWENTY - TWO
In college after lectures Lillian walked timidly to the entrance of the college. Someone from nowhere shouted, “Lillian! Lillian!!!”. Lillian forgot about her identity because she was desperate and she turned and responded, “I am here!! What is it?”. Serafina and her friends who saw this chuckled and laughed, “Are you Lillian now?”. That was when Lillian realized she almost revealed her identity. Livingston who saw this chuckled, “Hey, young lady you look frustrated. Sorry for causing you fear that night. I mean when my father died”. Lillian pinched her nose and said, “No need. Sorry for your loss”. Livingston nodded and said, “I will drop you off at your house. Please don't decline”. Lillian nodded and limbed along. When they sat in the car and it sped off, Livingston said, “Lucinda, do you know that the police is still investigating on who shot my father?”. Lillian forced a smile and said, “Really? I wish them good luck”. No sooner, the car parked and Lillian waved at Livingston and went away.
When Lillian reached, she found Verissah standing at the entrance and holding a gun.
CHAPTER TWENTY - THREE
“You look surprised right? That I have found your greatest secret. Lucinda! I never anticipated that you will do this” Verissah waved the gun at her. “Where did you find this?” that was Lillian. Verissah chuckled, “I found this gun underneath your bed when I was getting out your laundry. What did you use this gun for?”. Lillian hesitated to speak and Verissah continued, “If I ever find out this gun killed someone I will never forgive you trust me. Just pray my thoughts are not true”. Verissah stamped her feet as she walked out of sight. The following day, Verissah did not speak to Lillian no matter how hard Lillian tried. Verissah went into her room and locked herself up. Verissah dialed a number and no sooner someone came on the line, “Hello, good evening mum. Is there anything wrong?” the caller asked. “Livingston I don't even know whether I should say yes or no. I found a gun underneath Lucinda’s bed and I am very scared for her” Verissah addressed. Livingston laughed in a desperate state and said, “I don't believe this mum. Please did you ask her about the gun?”. “Yes I did and she hesitated to speak and that makes me more afraid. And her actions have totally changed. Please since you are her close pal try to inquire about the gun for me”. Livingston offered, “I will do just that”.
CHAPTER TWENTY - FOUR
“So you mean this gun contains Lucinda's hand print?” Livingston emphasized. “Yes Sir this is the truth and I am very sure too” the investigator said. That day, Livingston didn't talk to Lillian. At midnight Livingston thought, “If Lucinda’s hand print is on the gun that means she probably used it. No, no”. When Livingston was thinking about all these his phone rang. Livingston muttered and rised up to pick the call and he whispered, “Hello, who is this”.The person responded, “Sir, please it is the agent you told to…”. Livingston continued, “Yes, the hand print man. What's up”. The agent confirmed, “Sir, there is a hand print on the book the police brought to me”. Livingston emphasized, “Really? I will come there tomorrow. See you”.
The following day, Livingston went to the agent. “Why do you look worried” Livingston questioned. The agent disclosed, “Sir I am sorry to say that the hand print of the gun you brought to me is similar to that of the book”. Livingston became frustrated and worried, because he wanted the agent to lose sight of his desperation he shrugged, “Don't worry. Don't let the police know I will deal with this myself okay?”. The agent nodded and Livingston went away. Livingston didn't want Verissah to know about his enquiries because she would become worried. Livingston couldn't identify the connection between the gun and the book titled 'To my dear Lillian' Livingston thought, “If Lucinda's hand print is on the gun and is the similar one on Lillian's book at the same scene where my father died. Then, what connection is between them? Moreover the way Lucinda acted when the name Lillian was mentioned makes me suspicious”.
CHAPTER TWENTY - FIVE
The following morning, in college Lillian didn't talk to Livingston. Lillian looked stressed and quiet. Livingston noticed that after his father died Lillian was always like that, so he didn't press on the matter much.
When college closed, Lillian had no choice but to go home with Livingston’s car despite how she wanted to avoid him. Livingston began, “Lucinda we have been friends for long if anything is bothering you don't be afraid to share”. Lillian irritatedly said, “Livingston with all due respect, have I told you I am feeling worried or anything? No! So leave me alone”. Lillian looked away immediately after she finished speaking. No sooner the car parked and Lillian exited the car. Then, Livingston told himself, “Now, my guess is right. Lucinda is hiding something grave. It might be related to my father I will make sure she tells me everything she knows”.
That night Lillian couldn't sleep. She whispered to herself, “Look at me now, I am not my normal self anymore. I feel like Virgil haunts me and makes me feel guilty. I need someone to tell me I did nothing wrong and I don't deserve anything bad”. Lillian broke into deep sorrow and when she felt a little consoled she recalled how Livingston saved her from dying and even when she got bad grades, how Livingston gave her courage . Lillian stood up in front of a mirror in a room. Lillian told herself, “It is either I trust someone or die silently”.
CHAPTER TWENTY - SIX
When closing was due, Lillian panicked because of the decision she had made. When Lillian sat in the car, Livingston jumped into the car by her. As the car was moving, Livingston pressed on his question again, “Lucinda , you can trust me with everything. Even a secret you cannot share with anyone”. Lillian innocently thought over this and told herself, “Livingston can never betray me. Moreover, I am tired and frustrated of feeling guilty and Virgil always haunts me. Telling Livingston will…”. “What are you thinking about?” Livingston noticed.Lillian responded, “N- Nothing”.Livingston pressed on his question again in a soft voice. Lillian didn't have time to think anymore in a haste she cleared her throat and said, “Livingston can I trust you?”. Livingston shrugged, “We have been friends for long. I can't believe you are asking me this. Of course yes, you can trust me with totally everything”.
“I- I…” Lillian shivered. Livingston wrapped his arm around Lillian and Lillian gained courage but asked another question, “Promise me that you won't tell this to anyone”. Livingston whispered, “I promise you with my life”.
CHAPTER TWENTY - SEVEN
No sooner the car came to a stop and Lillian bid Livingston bye and went away. Livingston was happy that Lillian was ready to confide in him.
At midnight Livingston woke and thought, “Now that I have been able to lure Lucinda into confiding in me I can find all the answers to Verissah's questions ” a smile formed at his lips when he thought of this. His smile subsided when he thought, “Lucinda and I have been friends for a very long time I cannot betray her even if she had committed murder”. Livingston sighed and took his recorder. It was Livingston's habit to always record everything that bothered his mind. As he took the recorder he started, “Lucinda possesses a gun with the same hand print as the one on my father's book at the moment he was killed. Tomorrow Lucinda is going to tell me a secret she doesn't want me to tell anyone. I am worried what if she has a hand in Mr. Virgil’s death or there's something related to that? No!! no!!! let me just brush this thought away”. Livingston just off the recorder and slept.
On the other hand, Lillian was rest assured that telling Livingston would end all her guilt feeling.
CHAPTER TWENTY - EIGHT
The following day, Oliver who was sick and thereby didn't leave for college went to Livingston's room when he(Livingston) had left for college. When Oliver was helping himself with a football game, he found Livingston's recorder on the bed. Oliver who knew what it was thought, “What could my brother be worried about. I know he might have recorded his worries let me just intrude”. Oliver picked it up and listened to Livingston's last recording which occurred late in the night. After college, as usual Livingston jumped into the car beside Lillian however this time Livingston told the driver to take them to a cool place where they could chat. Livingston looked at Lillian and Lillian in turn gave a wry smile.
The car sped off and no sooner they reached the popular pub known as Vena Cruza. Livingston led Lillian into a nearby seat while the driver waited.
CHAPTER TWENTY - NINE
“I - I am…” Lillian panicked. Livingston encouragingly, “Lucinda do you trust me?”. Lillian nodded and Livingston continued, “Then tell me everything and I will protect you. Trust me”. Lillian began, “I ran away from my home because Susan whom I called my aunt told me that my father was a murderer. That day when my father got to know that Susan told me this Susan died. I thought my father killed Susan so I ran away in order to avenge Susan and my biological mother's death. Verissah adopted me and I found out my father and his wife were still alive in order for vengeance to prevail I shot my father. Later I found out he wasn't my biological father he adopted me when I became an orphan and all what I thought of him were all wrong. He died anyways I wasn't able to apologize to him. Look at how ungrateful I am” Lillian burst into sorrow and loud cries. Livingston consoled her and asked, “So you mean the gun Verissah found you used it to kill?”. Lillian nodded and couldn't console herself anymore and in a teary voice said, “Yes I feel so guilty”. Livingston still consoled, “Don't worry I will protect you. Just tell me who you killed and where you ran away from?”. Livingston wrapped his arm around Lillian and Lillian said confidentially, “ I ran away from your mansion.I am Lillian Anderson. I killed- kill- killed Virgil Anderson”. Livingston unwrapped his arm and cleared his throat and he ran his hands through his hair.
For some time which seemed like years no one spoke. Livingston continued to keep his head bent and Lillian kept mourning. Lillian spoke out, “Livingston I am sorry for killing your your guardian. I asked you whether they were your parents so that I could protect you from my rage attack. I thank God Virgil is not your father”. Livingston shouted in anger, “ He is more than that!!! He gave me hope when all hope was lost he gave me life I never had now I am so famous and I have extreme riches now!!!”. Lillian started to cry and Livingston who sensed this felt sorry for yelling at Lillian and said in a husky voice, “Let's go”. Before Lillian could say yes Livingston was seated in the car.
No sooner, the car came to rest and Lillian alighted and walked straight into the house without looking back.
CHAPTER THIRTY
When Livingston went home he spoke less and Oliver was the first to visit him in his room. Oliver didn't wait to be admitted in and he badged into the room and said, “I listened to your recording yesterday”. Livingston shouted, “Wait wait you mean you searched through my things how dare you. No shame of guilt bathed you after you listened to my recording and you are here bold without apologizing. Leave my room this minute”. Oliver retorted , “You can't sack me now. At least make me finish”. Livingston replied, “You have only five minutes to get done”. Oliver agreed and said, “Remember the good things Mr. Virgil had done for us. Even though we are not his children we still enjoy benefits as his children. You can't walk away from this can you?”. As soon as Oliver finished speaking he went away.
That night, everything Oliver had told Livingston earlier kept haunting him(Livingston). Livingston thought, “Mr. Virgil took care of my brother and I when we had no one at a tender age he paid all our bills and gave us our share of his properties as his sons. I cannot walk away from his death like that while I know who killed him. I cannot betray Lucinda I mean Lillian that way”.
CHAPTER THIRTY - ONE
When one day Lillian spluttered out, “Mother I won't come home with Livingston again”. Verissah inquisitively asked, “Why I thought you loved to come home with him. Why the change?”. Lillian irritatedly said, “The less you know the better if you want me to continue coming home with Livingston then be aware that I will walk home”. Verissah sighed and replied, “Okay I will send a driver to come pick you up”.
This was when Verissah was alarmed that there was something wrong. It was either Lillian was hiding something from her or Livingston was rather hiding something from her(Verissah).Verissah decided to plan an action to find the reason. In accordance with this Verissah planned a meeting with Livingston the following day without the notice of Lillian. When Lillian went out, Verissah called Livingston and invited him into the house. Verissah started, “Livingston I invited you here just for us to have a chit chat”. Verissah was very cautious of her words as she knows that Livingston won't tell her anything when he gets to know her intentions. Verissah stammered and said, “Am sorry for making you puzzled. I just invited you so that you can enlighten me on the activities of your class since Lillian does not really talk to me about them”. Livingston shrugged, “Don't worry I will give a detailed explanation”. Verissah smiled and they proceeded.
After talking for hours, Verissah thought it was time to inquire from Livingston about what was bothering her. “Livingston nowadays you don't come home with Lucinda anymore why?” Verissah inquired. Livingston coughed and replied, “Lillian oh sorry I mean Lucinda. I- I don't know”. Livingston who knew then that Verissah noticed his flaws and might not take it as mere mistakes. He said, “I mean I don't know what is wrong with Lucinda”. Verissah knew there was something wrong somewhere. In order to ease the tension she did Livingston a favor.
CHAPTER THIRTY - TWO
“Okay let's forget about Lucinda. Tell me whether your father's death there is any clue about the murderer?” Verissah said softly. Verissah sensed how tensed Livingston was so she asked, “What's wrong? You know the culprit? Don't get scared of telling me is that why you haven't been close with Lucinda because you think she is the culprit? I heard the hand print on the gun was the same as that on your father's book at the time he died”. When Livingston heard this he knew the amount of enquiries Verissah had made before inviting him. Without any awareness Verissah who knew what she said had a probability of being true she intentionally broke into tears and spoke through, “Livingston please brief me about everything don't hide anything from me. Lucinda is my daughter I have to know everything. Please”. Verissah did this multiple times and eventually knelt down and Livingston who did not know all what Verissah was doing was a trick surrendered, “Mum, I will tell you everything. Please don't just say this to anybody”. Verissah replied tearily, “Okay I promise I won't say this to anybody”. Livingston then said to Verissah all what Lillian had told him.
Verissah after knowing the truth hugged Livingston and said, “When you heard this you weren't able to do anything despite all what Virgil risked his life to do for you? You still kept your promise to my daughter”. Verissah sobbed and continued, “With regards to everything Virgil had ever than for me I never thought my daughter could ever kill this same man. I owe Virgil my life ”. Livingston kept shooking his head and he bowed down and wept till he was fed up.
CHAPTER THIRTY - THREE
Later, Livingston regained his composure and with courage he stood up and began to quickly walk away. Verissah called onto Livingston, “Where are you going in this anger”. Livingston replied, “I want to make justice prevail”. Verissah shook her head and said, “Please don't do this, please”. Verissah couldn't catch up with Livingston but she stumbled and fell down and began to mourn bitterly.
No sooner, Lillian arrived and was shocked to see the view that welcomed her. “Mother what is wrong why are you crying?” Lillian asked . Verissah in turn slapped Lillian and said, “You murderer and a person made of no heart”. Lillian wrapped her hands around Verissah. However Verissah pushed her hands away and spluttered, “I am disappointed in you. After murdering Virgil you still have the audacity to come here to deceive me again? Lillian or Lucinda?”. Lillian was shocked at this revelation and she knelt down and began sobbing. Lillian thought, “So Livingston betrayed me after deceiving me? I shouldn't have ever believed in him. No!!”. Before Lillian could utter another word, intruders badged into the house. Lillian was afraid to death and shouted, “Mother what is the police doing here. No please!!!”. Verissah spluttered tearily, “Please leave my daughter alone”. When Verissah said this Lillian came to hide behind her. Suddenly, Livingston entered the house and told the police, “This is Lillian Anderson popularly known as Lucinda Vanderpuye she murdered Mr. Anderson and I have prove”. The police chorused, “Show it to us then”. Livingston pulled a recorder out of his pocket and gave it to the police. After the police listened to the audio the commander said, “Miss Lillian Anderson you have been arrested for committing murder kindly follow us”. Lillian called onto Livingston severally but Livingston didn't even turn and went away. Lillian spluttered, “So Livingston tricked me into believing in him and in my foolishness I told him everything. I even allowed Susan to deceive me. No!!!”. The police dragged Lillian away.
