The sun hung low over the horizon as you walked out of the simulation dome, the orange glow casting long shadows across the school grounds. Despite the successful exercise with Shoto, your mind buzzed with a mix of emotions—relief, uncertainty, and a flicker of hope. The distance between you two felt less insurmountable now, but the unspoken weight of your last encounter in the Dark Forest still lingered.
As you made your way back toward the dorms, a voice called your name from behind.
"Y/N."
You stopped and turned to see Shoto walking toward you, his expression as neutral as ever, but there was something in his eyes that made your heart skip a beat. He slowed to a stop a few feet away, hands tucked into his pockets as if he was unsure what to do with them.
"Can we talk?" he asked, his voice softer than you'd expected.
You nodded. "Yeah, of course."
He gestured toward a nearby bench under a large oak tree, the leaves rustling softly in the evening breeze. You followed him, the tension between you still there but more muted, like the edges of a once-sharp wound had started to heal.
Once seated, Shoto took a moment to gather his thoughts, his gaze focused on the ground. "I've been thinking... about what happened in the forest."
You shifted uncomfortably, the memories of your fight flashing in your mind. The harsh words exchanged, the frustration, and the hurt—it had all seemed so overwhelming at the time.
"I shouldn't have reacted the way I did," he continued, his voice low but steady. "I was angry, but not just at you. At myself, mostly. For everything with my quirk, with my father... it's been building up for so long, and I took it out on you."
You watched him, surprised at his openness. This was a side of Shoto you hadn't seen before—the vulnerability beneath his composed exterior.
"I get it," you said quietly. "We both had things we were dealing with. I was scared, too. Scared that you wouldn't understand me, or that... I didn't belong in your world."
Shoto's eyes flicked up to meet yours, something like guilt flickering across his face. "You do belong," he said firmly. "I didn't realize how much pressure I was putting on myself to fit into this idea of what a hero should be. And I guess... I was afraid you wouldn't fit into that image, either. But that was wrong. You belong here just as much as anyone."
His words settled over you like a warm blanket, easing some of the doubt that had been gnawing at you since you'd arrived at U.A. You hadn't expected him to say it so plainly, but hearing it made something inside you feel lighter.
"I'm still figuring things out," you admitted. "But I want to be a hero. I want to use my powers to help people, even if they don't understand them yet."
Shoto nodded slowly, his gaze softening. "You're already on your way. And you've helped me more than you know."
