Chapter Eighteen : Reflection
When dinner is said and done (and after they all got full off pie), Y/n is the one to walk Katsuki out. Izuku volunteered to stay back and start dishes so that she could wish him farewell.
As the doors shut behind them, Y/n wraps her arms around her midsection and hugs her shawl close. Katsuki stops just a few feet away from her and slowly turns around to look at her.
After a few moments, he smiles. "Thank you for dinner, Darlin'. It was lovely." He states.
Y/n returns his smile with one of her own, "Thank you for coming."
It's quiet for a moment. Katsuki takes this moment to think. He's aware that his relationship with Y/n isn't much, in fact, it's barely even a relationship. He has to make a move or else he'll lose her, and he knows that. He just doesn't know how he'll do it.
"Well, I better get. Have a good evenin' Sweet-Cheeks!"
Katsuki turns on his heel and walks down the stairs and down the hill, out of Y/n's sight. Once he's gone, Y/n heaves a shaky sigh.
She isn't outside for long. It gets too cold for her to stand outside for longer than a few seconds, so she's quick to get back inside. Before joining Izuku in the kitchen, she takes a moment to light the fire in the parlor.
It quickly gets warm in the room as the flames dance on the logs. Y/n has to fight her urge to sit by the fire and read for a while. Later. She thinks as she makes her way back to the kitchen.
The dishes are almost done, but there's still food to be put away. Y/n busies herself with that task. Izuku and Katsuki mostly ate everything, so there isn't much to put away—but some of it can be saved from tomorrow's dinner.
Tidying up the kitchen sadly gives Y/n time to think. To think about the two boys who occupied her home this evening, and to think about her mother.
Y/n hadn't seen her mother all dressed up in months. She stopped wearing her fancy skirts and blouses about a year ago when she realized her husband wasn't coming home. Y/n didn't even think her mother still had makeup, but she was clearly wrong.
She's skeptical about her mother's reasoning for going back to the city. As far as she knows, the two sisters haven't been in contact for years. They haven't talked since before the war, if she isn't mistaken. Maybe they have been talking? She wonders. Y/n isn't home for a few hours every day, and that gives her mother more than enough time to send letters or talk on the phone.
She gets lost in the mechanic wiping of the counter as her thoughts run further and further away. If her mother truly hasn't been talking to her sister and is going to the city for a completely different reason, Y/n is fearful. Y/n's mother has always been a bit of a loose canon. Without her father to settle her down, there's no telling what she'll do on her own.
She can only hope that her mother and aunt have been in contact, and that her mom won't be alone in the city.
Once the kitchen is clean, Y/n grabs a bottle of wine and a bottle of whiskey while Izuku grabs two glasses. Together, they walk through the house to the front porch. The bottles of beer Katsuki and Izuku drank through are still on the porch, but they both ignore those in favor of relaxing.
Y/n pours up a cup for each of them: a glass of wine for her, and a glass of whiskey for Izuku. She'll sit down only after capping the bottles and handing Izuku his glass. With a huff, she falls back into the empty rocking chair beside Izuku and takes a nice long sip of her wine.
Neither of them say a word. They simply sit and enjoy their liquor, relaxing after a long day.
While Y/n can't help but worry about her mother, Izuku is thinking about today. He's thinking about how he had a good time laughing with Katsuki, and how dinner with his old bully wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. He almost catches himself hoping for another dinner, but he's quick to stop that train.
The night ends just like that, with Izuku and Y/n nursing alcoholic drinks and watching the sun go down over the town. When they can no longer think straight, they each wobble to their bedrooms and succumb to the weight of the day.
