Chapter 23 - Rachel Stark

When I pack the last box into our truck, I hop into the driver seat of my car and Steve gets into the passenger side. They put his bike in the truck, so he is making me follow right behind it so he can see how his baby is doing. I laughed at that. Before we take off, I plugged in my phone and started playing my music. The first thing that comes on is 'It's Been a Long, Long Time' by Harry James and His Orchestra.

"Hey! I know this song!" Steve says. I smile.

"Yeah, I got it when I got my phone. Peggy told me stories of the Stork Club and this song came up a few times. I heard it one time when she came and I fell in love with it." Then I notice something. "Hey, you didn't stiffen when I mentioned Peggy. What's up with that?" I say jokingly.

"I think I've moved on." he admits.

"I think you should get some closer. I mean, if I could get closer with David, while he was tied up, behind bars, and if it could end with a bullet going into his eye socket, I'd sleep better at night." I say with a shrug.

"Yeah, well, my closer wouldn't end with bullets." Steve says.

"Well, everyone is different." I say with a smile. "Although, I do have a question regarding Peggy. Did you guys ever kiss?"

"Yes, once. When I was off to my death."

"Well, that is depressing." When I finish saying that the song switches to 'Demons' by Imagine Dragons. I start humming the tune.

"Why don't you sing this one?" Steve asks. "I've never heard you sing."

"Fine. But I will warn you I'm awful." I say. I pick up the song at the chorus.

  When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide

They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide

The song ends, and I look out of the corner of my eye and see Steve's jaw drop.

"You are NOT awful at singing. How'd you do that?" he asks dumbfounded.

"Well when I was younger, I wanted to sing and act on Broadway, or to just become an actor or dancer. So Peggy and I would practice when she visited." I said. "Mrs. Peggy is a great singer. I'm sorry. I mean Peggy."

"Why'd you say Mrs. before Peggy?"

"I was eight and my parents told me to call her that but she told me to call her Peggy." I smile remembering the best days of my life. "She was a better mother than mine was. So we were close. Maybe in D.C. we can see her?" I ask pleading. "I bet she wants to see you." I wiggle my eyebrows. He laughs. Then his face turns dark in thought. I notice the song is 'Superhero' by The Script.

"O, yeah. This song. I can change it if you want." I say moving my hand to the stereo. Steve takes my hand and puts it back on the wheel.

"This song kinda describes us, doesn't it?" he asks.
