Two green orbs stared back into my blue ones. Laughing at my silliness, I got up and petted the black cat.
“Hey, buddy, you’re supposed to be bad luck. How did you end on me?” I scolded as I gently petted in between his ears. At least I think it’s a “he.”
“Shadow! Shadow, come back here, girl!” I stood up to see Kent.
“Hey, Kent,” I waved.
He waved back unenthusiastically and grabbed his cat.
“Why are you out with your cat so late?” I asked.
“I should be asking you why YOU’RE out so late. And I was just walking her.” Kent grinned.
“Oh so you walk your… cat.” I playfully punched his arm.
“She’s like a dog,” He smiled, and we started to walk side by side, enjoying the summer breeze.
I stopped abruptly and asked, “What happened?”
“What are you talking about?” Kent asked.
“What happened between us?” I asked, tensed for his answer.
“I don’t know… I guess we just drifted apart…” Kent smiled weakly.
“I really want us back.” I said, regretting it the moment it spilled out of my mouth.
“What us? There was no us in the first place,” Kent replied stonily.
“I meant our friendship.”
“We’re helping you find out who killed Ian. Nothing more.” Kent sighed.
Shadow, the cat, leaped into my arms and hissed at Kent.
I grinned and said, “Shadow says otherwise.”
I Think this is the shortest chapter i've ever written.
