"Whats the crazy part?" She asked.
"It eats." I told her.
"It eats?" She asked.
"Like alot alot." I told her.
"So your an even bigger glutton." Ceder said a few arm lengths away.
"Ass." I called him without any venom in my words.
"I have it on good authority that you were the one pilfering the snacks for more than one gathering." He said snippily.
"Excuse you I was having a private conversation." Laurel whispered.
"Were in a hole together, theres no such thing as privacy." Ceder said stretching his arms up dramatically.
"I wish i could bury you in a hole." Laurel muttered.
"How did you know it was me?" I asked him with a grin.
"So you admit it!" Ceder sat up with a loud whisper.
"Shhhhh." Laurel and I both shushed him.
"Dont wake them up." I scolded him referring to the other three.
"I knew it!" He whispered quiter. "All those years of getting my ass chewed for being the theif! I narrowed it down to either you or Thorn. And it wasnt Thorn because his wife put him on kid watching year before last so he was stuck in one spot. They all said it wasnt you because you were off being a good goatherder, but i knew it!"
Ceder laid back down in a huff. The feeling of vendication rolled off him.
"Your right but if you want to blame anyone it should be Laurel." I told him.
"What did I do?" Laurel asked with suprize.
"You wouldnt let me in the house if i smelled like goats. When i was hungry i didnt want to wash first and come back to a cold meal or even no meal if i didnt get back in time and the boys ate it all. I just snagged a little something to hold me over." I justified.
"Its not my fault that you would stink to high winds." Laurel snapped.
"5 years ago." Banyan said.
"What?" Laurel asked looking suprized that Banyan was still awakelike Ceder and I were.
"Ceder said it was the year before last but it wasnt." Banyan said drowsily.
"I guess shes right we were sleeping for sometime." Laurel said with a sigh.
A flood of emotions filled the room. Guilt, sadness, longing, grief it was a sudden torrent that moved throught the four of us.
"Why does it feel like yesterday even though so much time has passed." Laurel said, her voice was steeped with sadness.
Thoughts like murals came to mind. Memories of the man Laurel had brought back with her. The adrenaline she felt when her search began. The way the crystal had tasted cold in her mouth and faintly of blood. The way her man smelled like leather and river rocks. The flapping sound his familys tent had made when she and our other siblings negotiated with his family to bring him home. Her River. The one she had waited so long for, was gone.
"Shut it out." Banyan told Laurel.
Oak struggled in his sleep. Twitching uncomfortably.
"I cant Banny, im not like you." Laurel disagreed. Laurel placed her hands over her eyes still laying flat on her back. Pressing down on them as if it would suppress what she was seeing in her mind.
The thoughts kept moving like water down a hill. River by the fire laughing. Father making a toast. The arrows falling like angry stars and the awful sound they made ripping through the sky. River with an arrow through his chest. Everyone running and screaming.
