“Balder get out of the way!” Kat screamed as she readied the ax. Balder was distracting a humanoid creature away from Amanda. He leaped out of the way just in time for Kat to sink the ax right into the creatures head. It stopped dead in it’s tracks and tumbled to the ground, creating a thick pool of blood.
“Balder! Are you OK?” Amanda asked, rushing over to him.
“Yeah, I'm fine. Though I'm not sure I’d be talking to you right now if it weren't for Kat.” He said getting up off the ground.
“Hey, I had to do something. Thankfully that ax was here or...well let's not say. Anyway, let’s try and find a place to rest for the night.” She suggested, looking around the area. Then she spotted a house not to far from them. “Why don’t we make ourselves at home there for the night.” She said, pointing. Agreeing, they quickly made their way to the house. Coming up to the back door, Balder slowly opened it to see if it was clear. Seeing no immediate sign of danger, he motioned for them to come in. The house was fairly big and had the look of an old mansion, both inside and out. Walking through the kitchen, Amanda suggested they look for supplies.
“You two can do that while I scout ahead and make sure it's safe in here.” Balder said in a hushed tone.
“Alright, just be careful.” Amanda said to him before he left. Kat rolled her eyes at Amanda's tone. He nodded with a smile and exited the kitchen. Stepping into the living room, Balder admired at how spacious it was along with the elegant furniture and paintings. A roaring fire was burning in the fireplace, warming the room nicely. The walls on either side of the fire place were bookshelves that reached to the ceiling, which Balder guessed to be about fifteen feet high.
“Geez, I thought mansions only looked like this in movies.” He mumbled while taking in the whole room. He began to slowly walk through the room, but he didn't make it far when he heard a stern, hushed voice come from behind him.
“Don't move and keep your hands where I can see them.” The mysterious voice ordered in a hush tone. Balder froze instantly. “Who are you?”
“Don’t you think it's only fair you tell me who you are first, seeing as how you’ve got the upper hand?” Balder replied. There was a brief moment of silence then the voice spoke again.
“Alright. Turn around slowly.” Complying with the voices demand, he turned around slowly and saw a man and a woman with guns pointed at him. The woman’s blonde hair was tied back in a ponytail and had deep blue eyes. The man next to her was tall and lanky looking. He had messy brown hair, hazel eyes and some light, scraggly looking stubble on his chin. They both wore brown police uniforms that were stained with blood splatters. “My name is Officer Mara Sullivan and this is my partner Officer Duncan Grant. Now, it’s your turn.”
“OK, my name is Balder Feros.”
“Now tell us what you're doing here, Balder.” Mara demanded.
“I'm here seeking refuge for the night.” He simply answered.
“And why’s that?” She continued to hound him with questions. Balder looked over at Duncan, then back to Mara.
“Would you believe me if I told you?”
“Try us.” She cockily suggested.
“Just promise me you won’t lock me away in a padded room, alright?” He said lightheartedly. The officers didn’t respond. “We ran into a few of these…things. They were like monsters straight out of a horror film. They attacked us and we came here seeking shelter from them, at least until morning.” Balder was afraid they’d disregard everything he’d told them, but instead they too seemed unsure about something. “You’ve seen them as well, haven’t you?”
