"Hey Hisane?" Aang spoke as the two tended to the fire whilst Katara slept and Sokka wandered into the forest in search of more food
"Hm?" The young girl raised an eyebrow as she helped fuel the flames
"You're from the fire nation right? Well, of course you are, with the fire nation clothes and amber eyes and all that.." he murmured as Hisane gave him an amused smile "yes Aang, I am" she nodded
Aang hesitated in what he was about to say next "And you're an inventor and engineer, so, did you?"
Hisane averted her gaze from the airbender to Katara
"I was one of my nations best" Hisane answered honestly, bringing her hands to her knees as she looked down
"But, why?" Aang questioned, the fire bender turning to look at him prompting him to ask his question once more "surely you knew how your inventions were harming innocent people, why would you help them?" He frowned
"I didn't" Hisane spoke, more shame washing over her "I had but the faintest of ideas of the horrors the fire nation had put the world through, I mean, we were told the air nation had an army and sozin was protecting her nation" she scoffed
"I thought, I was helping spread our prosperity to the world, but I wasn't. And the only way to atone for the fleets I helped make and design is by ending this war" she clenched her fists as Aang stared at her with wide eyes
"So then..you didn't do it out of malice" the twelve year olds eyes widened "you thought you were helping others"
"It's so embarrassing" Hisane pulled at her face "if I had known..I'd never compromise my morals and honour in such a way" she mumbled, feeling a hand on her shoulder
"Well you can regain that honour by helping us defeat the fire lord, then your skills can be used to better the world"
"I'd like that" Hisane smiled as she grabbed onto aangs arm, the two heaving eachother up
"We all have our regrets, if I hadn't run away..maybe I would've been able to save my people" Aang frowned
"We cant change our past, but we can mold our future" Hisane nodded as Aang offered her a smile "yeah"
"Was helping others the only reason you became an inventor? That's pretty selfless" Aang hummed as Hisane once again fuels the flames
"I wish I was that selfless, but I am still human" she giggled "the only other reason was to impress my grandfather and father" she hummed, Aang face telling her to go on
"My grandfather held a huge resentment towards me..and dad? Dad was always off in the war, when he came back he'd barely even look my way, if something happened he'd bury his head in the sand and practically ignore my feelings" Hisane rolled her eyes "of course, I still dedicated my life to winning his affection and recognition so I thought if I applied my creative skills to the war he might see me as someone to be proud of"
