It was a week after Halloween, and JJ was stressed. Buck had impulsively decided that they were going to move.
He'd mentioned it to her a few months ago, saying that their apartment wasn't big enough, but he didn't mention it again, so she'd forgotten about it.
Until he'd come home from work yesterday, telling her he'd found a house. Not some crappy apartment where their neighbours constantly argued, but a real house where they could be a family. And JJ was thrilled.
Most of her doubt due to Taylor's comment had left, because for someone who did "charity work" Buck seemed too excited to help plan out her new room.
They'd visited the new house a few days ago, and JJ cried because this was the first time she would live in a house that was a home, not just four walls and a roof.
JJ went back to school next week, but that was also when they planned to move into the house, so, she and Sophia had spent the last two days packing up the apartment while Buck worked.
It was tiring, to say the least.
Buck was currently out for drinks with Chim, meaning JJ was stuck at an awkward family dinner with The Grants, plus Bobby and Michael's new boyfriend.
May had invited her, because the two hadn't seen each other in a while, but JJ was starting to wish she didn't accept the offer.
"Now I think everyone at this table has been a recipient of that, uh, Athena look. Except for Glenn." JJ nodded in agreement.
She had been a recipient the first time she referred to Athena as her grandma.
Athena agreed with JJ, saying she loved Buck like a son and her like a granddaughter, but she also said "Do I look old enough to be a grandmother?" Which JJ immediately shook her head and never said it again.
"Usually it means you're gonna be yelled at," May explained. "Or grounded." Harry laughed. "Our buried," JJ added on, making Athena chuckle, raising a brow at the blonde.
"What was she charged with?" Glenn asked, referring to the woman who had gone crazy on the freeway. "Assault with a firearm, gross negligence in the discharge of a firearm, brandishing a weapon, trespassing, indecent exposure, delaying a police officer and failure to obey and regulatory sign," Athena replied, making everyone look around in shock.
"Wow. Is there anything you didn't charge her with?" Michael took a sip of his wine. "Well, she did manage not to kill anyone." She sighed.
"Hang on." May spoke up. "Who'd she assault?" She asked. "Buck." JJ dropped her fork out of her hand. "What?" Athena smiled sympathetically. "He's fine, baby, she only threatened him, but pointing a firearm at someone is considered an assault, according to Penal Code 245."
"I don't think Buck'd mind if you guys dropped those charges. He felt kind of bad for Lola." JJ took a sip of her water before talking. "She still pointed a gun at him." She muttered.
"It was a stupid thing to do. But I don't know, you know? Kind of sounds romantic, just to lay yourself down for the world to see." JJ and May shared a glance at Micheal's words.
"A candlelight dinner is a romantic gesture, not a hostage situation 40 feet in the air," Athena replied. "Well, she did risk everything for love." Athena sighed at Bobby's words. "You have to admire her creativity if nothing else. And she did get her happy ending. Soft of." Everyone laughed.
"Before Thena arrested her." JJ butted in. "Mm-hmm." Athena chuckled.
"I'm with Athena on this one," Glenn spoke up. "When I saw that news story, all I could think about were the million different ways it could've ended badly. Like, there could've been a pile-up. Or one of those bullets might've ricocheted." Bobby made a noise of agreement as Glenn carried on.
"What if someone had a real emergency and help couldn't get to them because the freeway was shut down? I mean, you guys did a great job, but you also got pretty lucky." Athena smiled. "Thank you, Glenn. You're the only one who gets the big picture. Would you like some more wine?" She asked him.
JJ and May shared a smile, happy that Athena had warmed up to Micheal's boyfriend.
As dinner ended, JJ's phone pinged with a video from her Dad. She turned her phone sideways as May leaned over her shoulder to watch whatever it was.
The two girls laughed and smiled as they watched Maddie and Chim sing karaoke. JJ knew they were going to end up with each other just by looking at them.
The next day, Buck barged into JJ's bedroom with no warning, waking her up with a gasp. "Dad! What the hell?" She exclaimed. "It's 1 pm! How was I supposed to know you were still sleeping?" She sighed and opened up her duvet for him to join her.
"How was your date?" She snuggled up to his side. "Good, very good actually. She asked about you." JJ hummed, looking around her empty room. The only thing that was left were a suitcase of clothes and her bed. "Did she now?" JJ teased, making a kissy face. "Shut up." He pushed her away.
"She's not a redhead, is she? I can't handle any more redheads." She groaned, making him chuckle. "No, she's a brunette." He replied, making her mockingly cheer.
"Well, I'm happy for you, Dad." JJ sighed, leaning into his side even more before closing her eyes. Buck placed a kiss on her head, before grabbing her computer from her desk next to her bed.
"Disney movie marathon?" He asked. "Duh." There was nowhere JJ would rather be in this moment than her father's arms.
