Bryan arrived at the office of Landmark Realty and Investments, his heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nerves. He had barely slept the night before, too busy imagining what his first day would be like. As he stood at the entrance, Hailey Monroe approached with her usual bright smile.
"Good morning, Bryan!" Hailey greeted, her eyes flicking over his attire. "Interesting choice for your first day."
Bryan smiled, albeit a bit nervously. "Thanks, Hailey. I hope it's appropriate."
Hailey chuckled, though there was a glint in her eyes that Bryan couldn't quite decipher. "We'll see. Come on, follow me."
As they walked through the sleek, modern office space, Bryan noticed the clean lines and open layout. It was a vibrant and welcoming environment. Hailey led him to a boardroom where a presentation was already displayed on a large screen. A woman sat at the table, exuding an aura of authority and confidence.
"Bryan, I'd like you to meet Laura Martinez, our CEO," Hailey introduced. "Laura, this is Bryan Levine."
Laura stood and offered a firm handshake. "Nice to meet you, Bryan. Or should I say Bella?"
Bryan blinked, taken aback. "Uh, Bella?"
Laura's gaze was piercing, but she smiled. "We'll get to that. Have a seat."
Bryan sat down, feeling a bit off-kilter. Laura's presence was imposing, and he found himself straightening his posture.
Laura clicked through the presentation. "At Landmark, we pride ourselves on our progressive and inclusive culture. As you know, we are a woman-owned and led company, and our values reflect that."
Bryan nodded, recalling the presentation he had glanced at the night before.
Laura continued, "Now, let's discuss our dress code." She clicked to a slide showing various examples of appropriate attire. "Employees are encouraged to wear formal dresses and must always wear heels no shorter than 1.5 inches. If an employee is shorter than 5'8", they must wear heels that bring their height up to at least 5'8". Skirts are permitted with no restriction on length but must be somewhat form-fitting. If an employee chooses to wear slacks, they cannot wear a button-up shirt with a collar."
Bryan felt a growing unease. "So, this dress code applies to everyone?"
Laura's smile didn't reach her eyes. "Of course. We believe in fostering an environment where no one feels the need to adopt masculine traits to gain respect. Success here is about embracing femininity."
She looked Bryan up and down, her expression unreadable. "Which brings us to your current attire. A button-up paired with dress pants, and leather shoes with no heel. This does not align with our dress code."
Bryan's face reddened. "I thought the dress code only applied to women."
Laura's eyes flashed. "Everyone is held to the same standard here, regardless of gender. To assume otherwise is quite sexist, don't you think?"
Bryan's stomach dropped. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to—"
Laura interrupted, "Apologies are fine, but actions speak louder. Why did you introduce yourself as Bryan?"
Bryan was flustered. "That's my name."
Laura glanced at Hailey, who interjected, "In your contract, you agreed to go by Bella casually and Isabella formally. Didn't you read the terms?"
Bryan felt a wave of realization and embarrassment. "I, uh, I must have missed that."
Laura's expression softened just slightly. "We're committed to being the largest real estate firm by being overtly feminine. That includes using names that reflect our values."
From this point on, Laura and Hailey referred to Bryan as Bella. He wanted to question the legality of it but felt too intimidated.
Laura finished the presentation. "Although we got off on the wrong foot, I'm confident you won't disappoint me again. Welcome to Landmark, Bella."
Bryan—or rather, Bella—nodded earnestly. "I won't, Ms. Martinez. Thank you."
Laura nodded and left the room, leaving Hailey and Bryan alone.
Hailey smiled, her demeanor back to its friendly facade. "Let's get you set up with your email and start the onboarding courses."
Hailey showed Bryan how to log into the company email. "Your new email is isabellalevine@landmarkreality.com."
Bryan nodded, trying to process everything. Hailey then directed him to the company's online onboarding courses.
"I need to pop out for a bit to grab a few things. You work on these courses, and I'll be back soon," Hailey said.
Bryan nodded again, diving into the courses. The material was standard, focusing on company policies and procedures. He tried to ignore the gnawing discomfort about the dress code and his new name.
After about an hour, Hailey returned with several shopping bags and shoe boxes.
"These are all clothes that comply with our dress code," Hailey explained. "You can have them, and the cost will just be deducted from your first paycheck."
Bryan took the bags, genuinely grateful despite his unease. "Thank you, Hailey."
Hailey smiled. "You're welcome. Why don't you go to the bathroom and change into something more appropriate?"
Bryan took the bags and headed to the bathroom. As he unpacked the clothes, the reality of his situation began to sink in. The dresses, skirts, and heels were all undeniably feminine. He felt a pang of anxiety but pushed it aside. He needed this job. He opened the bathroom door and stepped inside, closing it behind him.
