Nadia
I flinch as Maks squeezes the trigger. The sound of two shots perfectly timed go off. I think for moment that I'm dead, that Maks actually shot me and that's why it was so eerily quiet. I blink open my eyes and realize that I'm not dead but very much still alive.
Maks had purposely missed the shot, the bullet was embedded in the wall behind me. Klara lays dead on the ground, blood seeping from a wound on the back of her head. Leo stands behind her, his gun pointed at Emil.
Maks doesn't hesitate, he uses Leo's distraction and trains his gun directly at Emil's forehead before squeezing the trigger again. This time he doesn't miss. The force of the shot causes Emil's body to slam back and hit the wall before he slumps down to the floor.
I release a pent up breath I had been holding in ever since Maks had his gun pointed at my face but the breath comes out as more of a sob. Maks immediately comes over to me and places his hands on either side of my face.
"Hey, it's okay princess. It's over," he leans forward and presses kisses on my forehead and my lips. "Let's get you out of these." He unties my wrists and ankles and helps me to my feet. I stumble but Maks catches me and lifts me into his arms. I wrap my arms around his neck and bury my face into his chest.
I thought I would never get to feel the warmth of his skin on mine again. The fear of almost losing him sends a shiver throughout my body and Maks pulls me tighter against him.
"What should we do with them?" Leo questions, glancing down at the bodies of Klara and Emil.
"Leave them," Maks grounds out.
"I agree, let's get the fuck out here," Leo says. Maks carries me up the basement steps and through the old building. Leo's Aston Martin is parked a few yards away. Maks gets in the back with me and Leo gets behind the wheel.
The feeling of Maks running his rough calloused hand through my hair soothes me. I can hear the familiar steady beat of his heart and that combined with his soft touches is enough to make me sleepy.
"You're welcome by the way," Leo says. Maks growls and I can hear the vibration of it with my ear pressed to his chest.
"I told you not to follow me," he snaps. "If you would have stepped out a moment sooner he would have killed..." I feel Maks tense.
"I knew what I was doing big guy. I had it all planned out."
"He didn't know what he was doing," I breathe out. Maks looks down at me, the corners of his mouth tugging up into a grin.
"I thought you were asleep," Leo exclaims.
"How can I possibly sleep when you two are bickering?" I feign annoyance. In reality, hearing the two of them bickering comforts me in way. It meant I was alive and how could I possibly complain about anything when just moments before I had been preparing myself for an inevitable death.
"Sorry," Maks says, brushing his thumb across my cheek.
"I'm kidding." I give him a small smile even though the cut on my face was hurting.
"I went against Caine's orders for the both of you," Leo continues. Maks rolls his eyes and I huff out a laugh.
"Yes, I'm well aware of the fact that you didn't listen to a fucking thing Caine or I said. How did you manage to find us anyway? I only texted the location to Caine." Maks questions.
"I followed you," Leo says simply. "Maeve was hungry for pizza and I offered to go pick it up but I followed you instead." Maks huffs out a breath and if I didn't know any better I'd say he was impressed with Leo's heroic efforts.
