Maks

Emil's directions lead me to the middle of fucking nowhere. There's nothing but a dense forest on either side of gravel roads until eventually the foliage opens up to a single abandoned building by a narrow river.

One minute my tires are crunching on the gravel as I pull up to the building and the next a loud boom fills my ears as my car comes to a sudden stop.

What the fuck?

Some blonde woman is standing in front of the building wielding a semiautomatic. She shot my fucking tires out. I throw the car in park and reach for my gun I had thrown haphazardly into the passenger seat in my haste. I kick the car door open and level the gun at her.

"Drop it," she sneers. When I don't move she raises her brows in challenge. "I would do what I say unless you want Emil to kill your precious Nadia before you've had the chance to say goodbye."

Blyat! I lower the gun and slowly place it on the ground in front of me. Now I really am fucked. The blonde walks over and kicks the gun across the gravel behind me.

Something about her looks oddly familiar. When she glances back up at me I realize where I recognize her from. She had been the naked woman lying in Emil's bed the night Leo and I broke into his house.

The blonde assesses me as she makes a slow circle around me, no doubt taking pride in the fact that I was at her mercy. "I can see the appeal now," she purrs. "That scar really is kind of a turn on." She trails a well manicured fingernail down my chest but I jerk away from her touch. She smirks as though she finds my disgust of her amusing.

"You're the naked woman my friend and I saw in Emil's bed," I state.

"You two scared the shit out of me," she laughs. "Emil wasn't too happy that you were nosing in his things. He gave me this as punishment for not notifying him sooner." She pulls up her shirt to reveal a purplish bruise on her stomach.

"He punishes you?" I question.

"Only when I'm naughty," she smiles deviously. God, had he brainwashed her? "I'm Klara by the way, but you can call me Kitten."

"Okay Kitten, where's Emil keeping Nadia?" She looks overjoyed that I referred to her as her nickname.

"I'm supposed to escort you there," she says proudly.

"Was that before or after you took out my tires?" I deplore.

She shrugs her shoulders. "Can't have you running off now can we?"

I follow Klara into the building and down a flight of stairs to a dingy basement. I could feel my heart thudding a beat harder every time my foot descended down a step. I try to push away the dark thoughts that this was all a ploy, that Emil had already killed Nadia and Kitten was leading me to my own death.

At the bottom of the steps, Klara walks towards an open doorway where I find Emil standing with his arms crossed, a smug expression marring his features. My heart leaps when I see Nadia tied to a chair, a substantial amount of blood dripping down from her nose.

"Maks!" She yells. Just laying eyes on her and confirming that she was still breathing eases some of my tension. I make to go to her but Emil's scathing tone stops me short.

"Don't take another step," Emil snaps. I straighten and fix him with a look of pure fury.

"You've got me here Daniil. Now what is it that you want?" I bite out.

"Maks! Look out!" Nadia screams at me as I feel a sharp pinch in my neck. My vision blurs and I feel unsteady on my feet. I fix my blurred gaze on Nadia before my world turns dark.

When I come to, the room looks much the same but I'm now tied to a chair.  Emil and Klara are gone and I can hear Nadia sniffling beside me. I roll my head back, the muscles in my neck screaming in protest.
