04. FOUR : unexpected happenings
Ella stared at her computer with a blank look. The screen lit up her face in the pitch black of her room. This was how she had spent every day after school for the past three weeks. She had no ideas whatsoever about what to write about. Sure, it shouldn't have been hard writing about Spider-Man, but for her it was. She'd never really seen him in action, but she has seen the news. The news of a vigilante screwing up the police's criminals. Ella was really perceptive, she figured out a pattern in Spider-Man that even the police hadn't figured out yet. He was going after a certain type of criminal, specifically one with long blonde hair.
About week ago, Ella had brought up the whole article deal about Spider-Man. She talked about how she needed a good picture of him and what his patterns were to Peter and Gwen. He just froze in his seat and excused himself before Ella could get in another word.
In the past couple of weeks, Ella had gotten really close to Gwen and Peter. She had brushed off their weird behavior that had settled after the second time Peter ran into her. In all honestly, Ella did feel a bit threatened by Gwen. She was beautiful, blonde, an IQ about as good as Ella's, she was everything a guy wanted, and she had known Peter a lot longer than Ella.
Now, she wasn't going to admit that she had a crush on Peter, but who wouldn't? He was hot and clearly everyone could tell. Hell, he wasn't the most popular kid in the school but he did have a certain appeal. Ella totally did not have a crush on Peter Parker.
She let out a frustrated sigh, her hands digging through her hair. There was no way Ella was going to be able to finish the article. She didn't even have a picture of him for god's sake. Fatigue coursed through her veins as she reached over for her phone, it's screen only reminding her of how much of a failure she had become since she came to New York.
The phone only rang twice until the person picked up, "This is Gwen Stacy."
"Gwen, hey," Ella said with false excitement.
"Ella, hello. You sound like crap. It's the weekend, should you be wide awake?" Ella rubbed a tired hand over her face.
"No, I have nothing to write about Spider-Man. Can you help?" she whined.
"Well," Gwen's voice pulled away from the phone to talk to someone else before she asked, "what do you have written now?"
Ella glanced up at the screen, "All I've written is 'Spider-Man has become a beacon of hope for people. He may be the exact change that this city has needed for years. He is the push in the right direction.' But that's it, and it's crap, and I don't even have a picture of him! Gwen, this is going to be due soon and I don't even have a picture of him!"
"Ella, calm down, okay? It's not a bad start but why don't you leave that alone for now? You've been there for over twenty four hours, get some fresh air and go looking for Spider-Man. Who knows, he may be out right now."
