Chapter Seventeen : The City

"But anyway, she tried to tell me the kid was mine when obviously—" Katsuki bursts out into laughter before he can even finish his thought, "Obviously that runt belonged to fuckin' Sero!"

Izuku mirrors Katsuki and falls back into his rocking chair as a hearty laugh rips through his chest. The kid Katsuki is talking about is a carbon copy of his father; he has tan skin, short black hair, and his dad's square smile. He looks nothing like Katsuki. The mere thought of something try to dump a kid on Katsuki when it looks nothing like him is hilarious.

"God damn, and I don't know if you know this, but there was a girl in Otoyo who tried to do the same thing. She said I knocked her up when she was fucking my whole platoon." The blond scoffs, "How the fuck are you gonna pin that on me when you're fuckin' 18 other soldiers raw?"

Izuku raises his brow and takes a sip from his bottle of beer. He's never been in a situation like Katsuki's talking about. He can't even begin to fathom how it all makes sense. Despite his lack of experience, Izuku sits and listens to Katsuki's stories. He'll laugh when it's appropriate and try and comfort him when he needs it. It's a great time, and Izuku can't help but be grateful.

Katsuki has definitely changed. He's not the mean ol' bully he used to be, no, he's a grown man with his own personality and thoughts. Izuku is glad he isn't the same boy he used to be. He's glad he can talk to Katsuki without being teased or laughed at.

Both men lean back into their chairs with a sigh and take a swig from their respective bottles.

"Y'know what, you aren't too bad Deku." Katsuki reveals with a snicker.

Izuku's eyebrows raise slightly. Did Katsuki really change, or was he just playing a role? He begins to think subconsciously. Is change possible for him?

When dinner is done cooking, Y/n gently plates it and takes it all to the parlor. She can hear the boys laughing on the porch, and it makes her happy. She can't help but smile at their boisterous laughter.

Before calling them in, she goes back to the kitchen to grab two more beers and a bottle of wine. She's in the midst of setting them up when she hears the stairs creak.

Slowly and cautiously, Y/n steps out of the parlor and looks up to the stairs. Her eyes widen at the sight of her mother all dolled up and carrying two briefcases.

"Mom?" Y/n whispers.

She looks up from the stairs and over to her daughter, and she smiles for the first time in years.

"Good evening, sweetheart!" She jumps down onto the floor and sets her luggage down to run and hug her daughter.

Albeit reluctantly, Y/n hugs her back. "Where are you off to?" She mumbles into her shoulder.

"I'm going back to the city! Your Aunt has invited me to come live with her for a while. I'm going to try and work on myself, y'know?" Her mother says, "I've known your father was dead for a while, I just never accepted it. I need to, and I can't do that in this town."

Y/n pulls away to look at her mother. She looks alive; there's color in her face and her hair is done, she's wearing makeup and jewelry. Y/n is happy for her, but she can't help but feel a little lost.

"Can you wait until after dinner to talk more?"

Her mother shakes her head, "No—I'd like to get out as soon as possible."

Y/n frowns. Her hands fall down to her sides and she takes a few steps away from her mother. "I see, well uhm, Izuku and Katsuki are out on the porch if you wanna say goodbye."

"Oh-! Are they now?" Her mother perks up, "I don't have very much time to chit-chat but I'll say goodbye!"

Y/n follows her mother through the front door and to the porch. Both boys perk up at the sight of her—similarly to her own reaction.

"Mrs. L/n! What're you doing up?" Izuku gasps, rising to his feet. He gives Y/n a shaky look before looking back to her mother.

"I'm leaving town and I thought it'd be nice of me to say goodbye to my favorite boy! And oh, good evening Bakugou!" She respectfully bows her head at the blond.

Katsuki gets out of his own chair and smiles, "Hello." He mutters, a little flabbergasted to even say anything else.

"Don't you wanna stay for dinner?" Izuku asks with furrowed brows and a small frown.

"Y/n already asked, but thank you. The train leaves here soon and I don't wanna be late. But hey! It was nice seeing you boys!"

And with that, she leaves. Everyone watches her jump down the stairs and walk down the driveway.

When she's out of sight, both Izuku and Katsuki turn to look at Y/n. They look for tears or shaking, or any sign of sadness really but there's none. Just shock.

Y/n clears her throat and nervously rubs her hands on her skirt. "Are you guys ready for dinner?"
