A week before the elevator incident with Ibuki, Kiyotaka Ayanokoji found himself involved in a different kind of plan. The usually quiet and solitary Kiyotaka was approached by the Idiot Trio—Kanji Ike, Haruki Yamauchi, and Ken Sudō—about an upcoming birthday event for their classmate Kokoro Inogashira.“We need to get her a present,” Ike said, his voice filled with urgency. “But we’re low on points.”
Yamauchi nodded vigorously. “Yeah, man. We’re broke. What do we do?”
Kiyotaka considered their predicament. “Why don’t we pool our points and buy one present? It’s more economical.”
The trio exchanged glances, nodding in agreement. “That’s a good idea,” Sudō said. “Let’s do it.”
Later that day, the group, minus Sudō who had basketball practice, headed to Keyaki Mall to find a suitable gift. The bustling mall was filled with students, families, and a variety of shops offering everything from clothes to electronics.
As they wandered through the stores, Kiyotaka couldn’t help but think about how inexperienced he was with such social activities. Birthday shopping wasn’t something he had much practice in.
In one store, Ike picked up a keychain, examining it closely. Yamauchi nudged him, grinning. “Is that for Satsuki Shinohara? Thinking of her, huh?”
Ike’s reaction was immediate and defensive. “No way! She’s ugly.”
Before Kiyotaka or Yamauchi could warn him, Shinohara appeared behind Ike, her face contorted in anger. “What did you just say?”
Ike turned, his face draining of color. “Sh-Shinohara! I didn’t mean—”
“Save it!” Shinohara snapped, storming off with her friends, including Kikyō Kushida, in tow.
Kiyotaka sighed internally, noting the social dynamics at play. As they continued their search, Yamauchi spotted Katsuragi Kōhei, a student from Class A, browsing through a shelf of chocolates.
“Hey, isn’t that Katsuragi?” Yamauchi whispered. “What’s he doing here?”
" Oh, are those chocolate? Don't tell me it's a gift?"
" Yeah, it's actually a birthday gift-"
Intrigued, the group subtly stalked Katsuragi, observing as he purchased a box of chocolates. They overheard him telling the clerk that the chocolates were a birthday gift for someone on August 29.
That night, the usual group gathered in Kiyotaka’s room. The topic of conversation quickly turned to Katsuragi and his mysterious chocolate purchase.
“Katsuragi’s buying chocolates for someone’s birthday,” Ike said, his curiosity piqued. “But who?”
Kushida, who had joined the group, shook her head. “I don’t know anyone with that birthday. And by the way, Ike, you shouldn’t call Katsuragi a ‘baldie.’ He lost his hair due to an illness.”
" That is serious" replied kiyokata.
Ike’s face reddened. “I didn’t know. And about Shinohara… I’ll apologize.”
Kiyotaka listened as the group discussed possible candidates for Katsuragi’s gift. Sudō, looking thoughtful, turned to Kiyotaka. “What about Horikita’s birthday? Do you know when it is?”
Kushida smiled brightly. “It’s February 15.”
Kiyotaka, impressed by Kushida’s knowledge, added this detail to his mental notes. However, he cautioned them, “We shouldn’t interfere too much. Let’s keep our distance.”
