Sonic was already tired of the waves below the boat rocking them back and forth. It was early in the morning and his balcony over the ocean had been quiet. Everyone that had partied the night before stayed sleeping in. He did have to admit the sunrise over the open ocean looked beautiful. He heard the sound of a door open and looked to the left. His neighbor, Shadow had come out of his room looking to enjoy the view as well.
"Morning Shadow!" Sonic waved without hesitation. He noticed how Shadow's body immediately stiffened though it wasn't too noticeable if you weren't looking for it. Every time Sonic greeted him he had the same irritable reaction.
"Morning." Shadow answered back.
"Real nice out, huh?" Sonic asked leaning over the side of the railing.
Shadow sighed taking a sip from a dark mug before finally looking over at him, "It was."
"Wow, so you're grumpy first thing in the morning. Why is that; didn't get any sleep? Wake up on the wrong side of the bed?"
"I slept fine. I just woke up to the wrong neighbor."
Sonic sighed rolling his eyes, "I dunno what I did to piss you off so much."
"Well that's the problem." Shadow answered. "Besides what's the big deal if someone doesn't like you? Why do you have such a problem with it? Why do you have to be liked by everyone?"
Sonic opened his mouth but quickly shut it. Wrapping his mind around what Shadow said. "Well," he finally spoke after a second, "because I'm just a likable guy." He smiled wide and proud. Not like he had a savior complex or was a giant people pleaser and worried about wronging and causing someone else inconvenience or harm.
Another roll of the red eyes from across the way but Shadow chose not to add anything else to this otherwise useless conversation busying himself with finishing the coffee in his mug.
"Any plans for the day?" Sonic pried keeping to his decided goal to befriend the darker hedgehog on this trip.
"Yep." Shadow answered, "And no, I'm not going to tell you."
"Heh.." Sonic shrugged with a light smile, "Alrignt, guess I'll just try to catch you later."
* * *Blue quills slightly prickled in the sun rays as Sonic stepped above deck on the hunt for his friends. Amy said she wanted to meet up for breakfast. The tables at the restaurants were already full of people who had the same idea of a social first meal. Sonic knew Shadow wouldn't be participating. Instead he focused on the conversation Amy and Tails were already having as he sat down.
"That's why flared bell bottoms or puffy pants just doesn't work for her, they don't compliment her shape! I tried telling her to accentuate her neck line" As far as Sonic could gather Amy was giving Tails a rant about one of her customers in her boutique. She paused only briefly to acknowledge that the blue hedgehog had joined them, "Hi Sonic," and continued on her rant, "to which her husband replied 'what neck line, she hardly has a neck to start with.'"
Both the boys raised their brows at the bitter comment."Yikes! Sounds like grounds for divorce." Sonic grumbled flipping through a laminated menu.
"It does sound cruel" Tails agreed.
"Exactly! So I took the time to remind him that unless someone is a giraffe, none of us really have much of a neck." Amy motioned to herself and both the boys at the table.
"Hey that isn't" Sonic paused in his protest but upon further inspection on both his friends and his hand reaching up to grab at his own neck, a small line between his shoulders and jaw he corrected himself, "whoa, yeah. Why are we built like that? How does this little thing even carry our heads?"
Tails chuckled, "Should I give you a tour of the muscular system?"
"No thanks Foxy Frizzle, no field trips inside anyone's body for me!" Sonic shook his head, "Hey, what did you guys order for food? I can't decide."
Tails perked up, "I'm getting the chocolate chip pancakes with some fruit, eggs, and sausage. And an orange juice."
"Nice." Sonic nodded then looked to his left, "And you Amy?"
"I went for the strawberry pancakes, eggs and bacon with some avocado and a half slice of toast, orange and apple slices, and some tea." She answered just as their order had arrived. The waiter stood by after setting their plates and cups down from his large trey to take Sonic's order.
"Well alright then, looks like I'll have... the extra large breakfast burrito! With an orange juice as well."
