the reaping
"Evie, wake up, star.." her brother whispered softly, stroking his hand through her hair. "it's reaping day."
reaping day.
it was only her first year, and she was lucky enough that her name was only in there a few times.
but it didn't make a difference.
your name in the pot, is still your name in the pot.
she stirred slowly, a soft groan leaving her lips.
"i miss last year, neither of us had the risk last year.."
her brother was 21, and she was freshly 12, so the past few years were bliss, neither could be reaped.
this year they weren't so lucky.
"i know." he stated delicately, his voice calm. "i've picked you out a dress, let's just try look our best in case, okay?"
"image is important."
he only nodded with a slight smile, passing her the blue summer dress with a kiss on her forehead before leaving her alone to get ready.
----------
she held his hand the entire way there, right up until she couldn't anymore.
she held his hand, right until she had to go get her blood taken.
it didn't hurt much, but it was a realisation..
it's real, she could be sent to her death.
today.
she lined up with the other 12 year olds, her friend - Isabella - who gripped her hand tightly in their fear.
Flavius, the escort - a black man with so much glitter in his hair it should be a crime, and yellow eyes that he matches to his yellow clothing - stood proudly on the stage, everything that the Capitol stood for as he smiled brightly for the cameras.
"ladies and gentleman, welcome to the 73rd Hunger Games!" he spoke pridefully. "and may the odds be ever in your favour. before we begin, we have a very special film to show you, all the way from the capitol!"
Guinevere didn't bother to watch the video, she'd seen it before, she'd seen it every hunger games, but the words echoed around district 4 regardless.
