the next few days were sort of a blur. ponyboy had to go to court for the soc i killed. dally and i decided to follow them to the courthouse, mainly because i was supposed to be standing there right next to pony.he seemed so broken. i felt so guilty that i couldn't be there by his side, physically.
he didn't talk much at the hearing, besides if he enjoyed living with darry. speaking of darry, he did most of the question answering which was probably for the better.
overall, the hearing went in the way we wanted, and pony and i were proven innocent. the ride back to the curtis household was surprisingly silent.
you'd think all the guys would be cheering and celebrating the fact we won, but it was quiet the opposite. the deafening silence remained the whole way home, minus the soft radio in the background.
once they got back home, the brothers filed back into the house, taking part in their normal activities. i walked with dallas behind them and we both plopped down onto the couch.
darry sat on the other side of the room in his old recliner reading the paper. pony and soda headed back to their room to get changed out of their fancy clothes and into something comfortable.
awkward silence overtook the room as us three sat there besides the faint sound of the tv in the background. ponyboy came back out of his room soon after changing, and he walked up to darry.
dallas and i watched him as he walked up to darry. he stood before him with his hands behind his back. darry looked up from his newspaper to meet his gaze.
"what do you want?" he asked, clearly stressed. i'm sure he didn't mean to come off as rude as he did, and it was shown by the look of guilt he formed directly after.
"oh, uhm, i was gonna ask if i could go meet up with cherry? she said she had something she wanted to tell-"
"sure, just have dal-" darry began to say, wanting dallas to walk with him. the immediate realization was shown on darry's face as his expression filled with sorrow.
i immediately looked over at dallas, and i could see his heart break by only looking at his face. i knew now that dallas truly did regret robbing that store, he truly did.
"just...be safe please." darry said, rubbing his temple. ponyboy nodded in response, grabbed some cigarettes, and left the house.
i looked back at dallas, his expression unchanged. his gaze was glued onto the closed front door, the pain in his eyes evident.
"dallas..." i said softly, going to place my hand over his shoulder in a comforting manner, but he suddenly jerked away.
"i'm going on a walk." he said sternly, getting up from the couch, and storming out the front door.
i let out a deep breath and hung my head down. this was pure torture, having to watch my friends proceed living their sorrowful lives as a spectator.
this feels like hell on earth, or just plain down right hell.
i decided there wasn't anything else i could do, so i fixated my gaze onto the tv, trying to find interest in the old western themed cartoon.
