Maks

I had just walked in the door when my phone buzzes in my jacket pocket. I fish it out and glance down to see Nadia's name flashing on my screen. I don't hesitate before hitting the answer button.

Her panicked voice sounding on the other end of the phone was enough to put me in action. Her parents house was a fifteen minute drive at best from my penthouse but I somehow make it there in just over five minutes.

The house is dark, the only light on is in the upstairs bedroom that I now know is Nadia's. I didn't have time to grab any weapons other than my 9 mm that is always strapped to me when I'm out. I draw it and make my way up the pathway to the porch.

I try the front door first, twisting the knob only to find it locked. I crouch down behind the hedges up next to the house and round the corner to the backyard.

I soundlessly creep along the patio until I reach the backdoor. An eerie feeling settles in the pit of my stomach, a cold chill snaking its way down my spine as I try the door and find it unlocked.

I push the door open, my gun at the ready. The house is quiet, the only sound is coming from the sprinklers watering the back lawn. I ease my way in, checking the dining room off to the right before pushing my way into the kitchen.

My boot crunches down on something. I glance down to find shattered glass littering the white tiles, pieces of a broken vase and pink carnations all over the floor.

I go back out into the foyer, where I find a broken picture frame on the floor that held a photo of Nadia when she younger.

What was the purpose of breaking in just to a destroy a vase and a picture frame? I'm beginning to think whoever broke in just wanted to scare Nadia enough to freak her out and then leave before she called for help.

I inch up the staircase and am just about to reach the landing when someone comes sprinting down the hallway and barrels into me. The impact causes the both of us to stumble down the stairs and I land hard on the floor, the intruder's body pinning me down. My gun gets knocked out of my hand and slides across the floor, slamming into the opposite wall feet away from me.

I try and shift my weight but the guy raises a knife and strikes at my face with it. I dodge it at the last second, the blade bouncing off the tile. Before they have the opportunity to slash at me again, I shove hard at their chest. With their weight no longer pinning me down, I manage to twist my way out from under them and go for my gun.

Right before I reach it, I'm grabbed by my leg and pulled back down to the ground. I catch myself on my knee and strike out blindly behind me, making contact with the guy's face. He grunts, reeling back from the pain but comes at me not even a half second later.

I only now notice that the guy's features are covered by a ski mask. He's built similarly to me, maybe slightly shorter but just as muscular. He swings at me and connects with my jaw. I feel my teeth rattle in my head, but I don't waste a second nursing the pain before I get back to my feet and go for the gun again.

I manage it this time, snatching it up from the ground and pointing it at the spot where the guy had been moments before. Except I turn to find the spot empty.

I hear pounding footsteps sound towards the back of the house and the sound of the door being slammed back against the wall. I take off sprinting, only managing to catch a glimpse of their retreating figure shooting across the backyard.

I fire a few wild shots off but he manages to dodge them and disappears in the dark foliage of the trees.

Shit.
