Sam
I held onto Neil as he sobbed into my arms. He was petrified, just like I had been when I came to the WhiteFalls Pack...I wished I could've helped him more, but I knew the final decision wasn't with me...Neil was 17...or maybe 18? Either way he was mated, oddly, to my half brother.
I knew there was nothing I could do, but every bone in me yearned to do something for him.
"What can I do Neil?" I pet his sandy colored hair.
"I-I-I wanna stay here!" He begged.
He can't stay... Winter chimed in after what felt like a millennia of silence.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Don't you remember what happened after it was discovered Nick was our mate? Winter reminded me, we came here almost immediately.
"Well..that's what Nick wanted..." I sighed. " maybe Ramsey doesn't." I tried to thick reasonably.
You think Ramsey will just let him stay here? Winter challenged, Ramsey is an Alpha. He will want to go home, to his pack, and he will want Neil with him.
"Maybe I can convince him." I shot back.
You wanna convince Ramsey? The stubborn ass mule of a wolf? To let his mate stay here with us? It was as if I could see Winter's dead ass face, annoyed, and moody.
"Never say die!" I responded.
Winter huffed and it was like I could see him turn his back to me.
I just rolled my eyes at Winter. I wasn't exactly sure how the law worked, but I was sure I would do my best to keep Neil here, with WhiteFalls...as long as I could. He was not ready for the outside world, no matter if the world was going to rush in at him, or if it would be thrown at him...he was not ready for the life that waited for him in New York.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. Neil and I both sat up a bit as the door opened and Nick poked his head in the room.
"Neil," Nick spoke up, "can you give us a minute?"
Neil frowned and his body stiffened. He clearly didn't want to leave, but as Nick eyed him, he couldn't refuse.
"It's okay Neil," I spoke up.
He slunk away as Nick slide into the room. He sat beside me and then put his hand on my hand.
"Uh..." I vocalized, "what are you doing?"
"Checking your head!" He said.
"For what?" I shot back.
"For a concussion or something!" Nick spoke louder than he meant to.
"Why??" I shoved his hand away a little.
"Why were you shocked when I reminded you they are mated?" Nick's eyes were large and filled with worry.
"What do you mean?" I raised an eyebrow.
"You already knew that Ramsey and Neil were mates..." he sighed, reaching out and touching my face, "you were there," he pulled me closer, "remember?" He put his head on mine.
In a flash, a memory flew by. The memory of Neil and I, clutching onto each other and Ramsey lost his mind. Ramsey was shouting and thrashing, he was screaming the word "mate" over and over again. It was like he couldn't stop.
Nick then pulled his head from mine.
"What was that?" I said, unsure of how to react.
"I shared a memory with you." He shrugged like it was normal.
"I didn't know we could do that." I felt my saucer like eyes. "Mates can..." he began. "Remember I said we are fully mated now...things change."
"Yeah..." I breathed out.
I felt a bit in shock and awe that I had forgotten Neil and Ramsey were mated...my mind was a muddled mess.
"I'm going to go get Paul," Nick leaned over and kissed my forehead.
I sat on the bed as Nick rushed in and out of the room. Dr. Devereaux was on his heels.
"What were you talking about?" The doctor rushed.
"Is memory loss common in comas?" Nick asked, probably for the whatever number of times considering the doctor's face.
"I mean, it can be if whatever causes the comma is traumatic." He looked shocked, "why?" It was then the lightbulb clicked and he whirled around. "Are you having memory loss Luna?"
I felt my tears well up in embarrassment. "Just a little," I made a tiny symbol with my fingers.
"Well..."Paul began. "Honestly Alpha, I'm not sure if that's the comma or whatever drugs were in his system for so long...the ones that surprised his wolf." He shrugged. "I read some documents about such medicines, but they normally have such grievous consequences that no one uses them...one of them is memory loss."
"Can you fix it?" Nick's arms crossed.
"Maybe," Paul furrowed his brow. "We might have to do a blood transfusion."
Nick just shook his head.
"I'll go do some research," Paul smiled a little at me as he left the room.
I kept my eyes on Nick. He crashed back on the bed after Paul was gone. His brow was furrowed and he seemed filled with worry. Instinctively, I threw my arms around his upper body and pulled him into a hug. I heard him chuckle a bit before tapping me to let go.
"Does Neil have to go?" I asked after a few minutes of piece.
"Probably," Nick spoke up, "Ramsey doesn't seem the type to just leave him here."
"What if we are wrong about Ramsey being his mate?" I asked.
"No," Nick denied, "it doesn't work like that...when we know, we know."
"But..." I began, having realized Neil had not taken his Test yet, "Is Neil going to go for his Test still?"
Nick looked at me with his head cocked to the side. "We kinda have to." He shrugged again, "it is law, even if they find each other the old fashioned way." He laughed a bit.
"Nicholas," I chided him. "Who's gonna take him?"
"It can be done here." He smiled sweetly at me as he took my hand.
"I thought you needed to be in a hospital," I recalled the large centers in NYC all made specifically for The Test.
"Not here." He chuckled, "we are too far away."
"So..." I began, "can't you just do it for him? Or can Paul? Just to be sure."
Nick raised a suspicious eyebrow, "what's all of this interest in Neil suddenly?
"He's my friend." I sighed. "He's been my friend the whole time...and even if you made him be my friend...we eventually became real friends and I'm worried about him..." I tried to hold my tongue, but the last part decided to spill, "I would've liked someone to check in on you before I came out here, and I'm sure you would've liked the same."
Nick started to speak, but stopped when he realized I was correct. "Sam," he called.
I turned to him.
"You can't protect the kid from everything." He kissed my head again.
"No," I bit my lip, "but I can damn sure try." I smiled a bit as he laid beside me.
It may have been hard to believe, but I wanted Neil to be happy. He had been a dear friend...and I felt like he was somewhat my child. I wanted to protect him, to keep him safe, and to keep him out of Ramsey's hands.
