The morning sun cast a golden hue over the town as volunteers gathered for the much-anticipated beautification event. The air was crisp with the promise of spring, carrying the scent of freshly turned earth and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze. The park, still In its infancy, held the promise of transformation. Rows of saplings stood tall, their tender branches reaching towards the sky. Patches of vibrant flowers dotted the landscape, their colours a stark contrast against the muted tones of the surrounding grass.

Volunteers bustled about, their enthusiasm infectious as they worked to breathe life into the once neglected space. Young and old alike wielded shovels and rakes with determination, volunteers serving food and drinks all around, their laughter mingling with the sound of birdsong overhead.

Caroline wiped a bead of sweat from her brow as she leaned on her shovel, surveying the progress of the newly planted flowers. Hope worked diligently beside her, her vibrant red hair catching the sunlight giving them the effect of molten copper, casting a fiery halo around her.
“Can you believe my luck?” Caroline sighed, breaking the comfortable silence between them. “Yesterday my car breaks down and I have this huge argument with Elena, and my boyfriend won’t even look at me, now I’m stuck here because I’m too chicken to make up with my friends.”
Hope glanced over, offering a sympathetic smile. “That’s rough, Caroline. But hey, at least you’re here with me now, right? All you need to do is try. Talk to them, they’re your friends, if anything they’ll understand better than anyone where you were coming from.”

Caroline nodded, grateful for Hope’s understanding. As they continued to work, Caroline found herself opening up more, with the weight of her problems spilling out.
“I swear, my mom is always too busy for me,” Caroline confided, frustration evident in her voice. “She’s always off at some meeting or charity event, and I’m left feeling like I don’t even matter.” “Oh? Isn’t she here now?” “Yeah, but like for how long? It’s going to be minutes before one of her deputy call her and she takes off because ‘Its an emergency Caroline I have to’ it’s always and emergency with her.”
Hope listened attentively, her expression softening with empathy. “It must be tough feeling like you’re not getting the attention you need from your mom.”
Caroline nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her at being able to share her feelings with someone who understood. Although she couldn’t share everything with Hope it was nice to talk to someone who didn’t seem to have their own drama clouding their life, Elena was her best friend but with Katherine making her spy on her Caroline couldn’t help being dishonest with her “And then there’s my boyfriend… things have been so rough between us lately. It’s like we’re constantly at each other’s throats.” she huffed disappointedly.

Hope tilted her head giving a comforting look to Caroline. “Have you talked to him about how you’re feeling?”
Caroline sighed, shaking her head. “Not yet. I just don’t know where to start.” Just then Caroline mentioned her friend Elena’s relationship problems, a shadow crossed her face, a flicker of guilt dancing in her eyes. “Speaking of relationship problems, Elena’s going through a rough patch with her boyfriend too,” Caroline remarked, her tone tinged with unease.

Hope noticed the change in Caroline’s demeanour but chose not to press further, sensing that Caroline wasn’t ready to share the full story. She already knew what this was about.

“Relationships can be complicated,” Hope replied diplomatically. “But you’re a good friend for being there for Elena."

Caroline nodded, her guilt only enhanced by Hope’s words. She hadn’t been a good friend, she knew that, but at the same time she was so scared of Katherine. Glancing up they saw Elena Gilbert running up to them, “Hey guys, I’m sorry I’m late.” “Oh it’s fine, Elena this is Hope she’s new here.”
“Hi,” Hope waved a dirt covered hand, brushing her red hair out of her face she smiled that Elena returned “Hi, I’m Elena, I haven’t see you here before?” “Nope, it’s like Caroline said I’m pretty new here.” Hope chuckled “Its nice to meet you Hope.” She smiled “Likewise”  “Oh and there’s Stefan, giving the moody eyes.” Caroline added “Don’t start, we haven’t talked since our fight.” Elena glanced at Stefan. The brunette sighed, her brow furrowed with worry. “I just don’t know what to do about Stefan. We’ve been arguing so much lately, and it feels like we’re drifting apart.”
Caroline reached out a comforting hand, her eyes full of empathy. “I’m sorry,” “Why would you apologise, you did nothing except be a good friend.” As they spoke, Hope, watched intently, her heart aching for the friends. She knew they eventually mend their strained relationship, but they were both too stubborn to make the first move. She leaned forward, catching Caroline’s gaze. Silently, she mouthed the words “Talk it out.” The blonde smiled gratefully in response, “Hey guys, I think Carol Lockwood needs help by the tables I think I’ll go and see what that’s about ok?” with that she left them be.
