Vanessa's POV:-

Emma sighed, her lips curling around the rim of her coffee cup. ''She's being such a bitch.''

Damien chuckled, his hands deftly preparing a sandwich. ''Thanks for summing up Nessa in a single word.''

Meanwhile, I lounged in the chair, idly waiting for my servant to deliver my breakfast.

"Come on, guys! Cut Nessa some slack," Matthew interjected, joining the banter as he entered the kitchen, Nicolo trailing behind him. "She deserves some credit for messing up so royally, doesn't she?"

"I mean, seriously, it's only 11 in the morning. Who even wakes up this early?" I grumbled, my gaze locking with Nic's as he observed me with an odd expression.

"And what's so captivating about my face that you're staring at it?" I raised an eyebrow, catching Nic's prepared demeanor. He was all set, dressed sharply in a pressed black shirt and perfectly tailored trousers. Impeccable, as always.

"Are you alright?" he asked, bemused by my apparent grumpiness despite my upbeat disposition.

"I'm always alright. Apparently, Van has claimed the title for being uptight and rude," I quipped, nonchalantly blowing air over my nails.

As my words left my lips, I couldn't help but notice the effect they had on him. His expression contorted into a portrait of utter bewilderment, as though his mind had suddenly encountered a glitch in its circuitry. It was as if I had tossed a riddle into the air, and he was desperately trying to unravel its enigmatic threads.

Meanwhile, Emma's reaction was no less dramatic. With a groan that reverberated through the room like a thunderclap, she made it abundantly clear that my remark had struck a chord deep within her. If looks could kill, the glare she shot in my direction would have left me in need of a resurrection spell.

"Wait, did I misspeak?" I ventured, feigning innocence as I reached for the sandwich that my ever-resourceful elf, Damien, had placed before me. With a single bite, I savored the symphony of flavors that danced upon my palate, all the while awaiting their response with an air of nonchalant curiosity. After all, a little mystery only adds spice to the day's proceedings.

"I am concluding that you intentionally try to mess everything up, there is no other plausible explanation," Damien uttered with a scowl directed squarely at me.

But what had I said to provoke such a reaction?

'As if you're unaware,' the voice echoed within my mind, prompting a weary sigh to escape my lips. My partner in this shared vessel, my alter ego, never ceased to offer their unsolicited commentary. Their presence was as persistent as a shadow, always lurking just beneath the surface of my consciousness, ready to interject at the slightest provocation.

"At this point, it's pretty obvious you guys have a favorite, and spoiler alert—it ain't me," I muttered, unable to shake off the feeling of being the odd one out. With an eye roll that could rival a teenager's, I couldn't help but wonder why I even bothered with these people who seemed about as necessary as extra pockets on a shirt.
