Samuel
Again I was in the grassy field, the same as I was before. I lifted myself up quickly and couldn't contain my shouts,
"Nick!" I cried. "Nick!"
No response.
"Winter!" I shrieked, "Winter!"
No response.
"Someone!" I yelled, "someone! anyone!" I continued, "please!"
The wind howled and the trees seemed to whisper as the wind rushed through the tight branches filled with leaves.
"Hello?" I stepped forward toward the trees.
In that moment I caught sight of the white wolf with the ice blue eyes. It stared at me, seemingly waiting on me. It was only then that I realized, the wolf, it had to be Winter. Winter had to go with the color of the wolf's coat.
"W-Winter?" I called out to the wolf, walking forward slowly.
Suddenly the wolf barked at me. It barked, then it whimpered and twisted itself around.
"Winter?" I called again.
The wolf barked again and then moved a bit into the forest. When I didn't follow it, it came back and did the same motion.
"Do you want...me to follow you?" I asked, steadily walking closer.
Again the wolf, who by then I assumed was Winter, barked. It twisted its body around and then turned its head to me. He was just waiting.
I slowly started to follow him as he took off into the trees, but his pace picked up quickly and I found myself running. I ran and ran after Winter, but I lost sight of him.
"Winter!" I shouted as I kept running, "Winter wait!" I felt my breath panic. "Don't leave me!" I felt tears begin in my eyes, and I closed them to stop the tears. The next moment I opened them, and there was Winter, looking like me, but with the white hair he clear eyes. I couldn't stop myself and I smashed into him.....
The next moment, my eyes fluttered and my body felt heavy as stone as my eyes peeled open. Everything hurt; my eyes burned, my head ached, my heart raced, everything tingled like it was stuck by thousands and thousands of small needles.
"Baby..." I heard Nick's small voice come out. It was deep and filled with worry.
Wh-what happened...Winter's small voice came out as well. Sammy... he called.
"Winter!" I called, "thank God you're okay!" I cooed at him as my eyes were semi-blinded.
I rubbed on my eyes a bit and blinked for what felt like three minutes before the blinding light began to fade.
As my eyes adjusted, I realized that Nick was directly above me, or well I was directly below him. The blinding light had been a simple light fixture. I tried to sit up but felt a pang in my head. I groaned and my hands went up immediately. I had barely raised up at all and had only been on my forearms. I sank back down at once.
Mate...Winter voice was low and drawn out. He seemed weak, tired, unable to do anything. It was as if I could see him in my mind, lying upon the ground, worn out, half asleep.
"No!" Nick called, "don't go so fast baby." He put one of his hands on my own. "You've been out a while, it'll take some time to get your strength back."
Winter sighed inside of my mind.
"Don't try to get up all the way yet. What happened to you was a bit traumatic and the doctor says you need to rest." He continued as my mind found itself trying to focus.
"Out a while?" I felt my brow furrow as my head fell back into what felt like his lap. "How long is a while...?" I dropped my hands from my head and adjusted myself so that I was looking up into his eyes.
The smell of sandalwood engulfed me and my body relaxed. Winter quieted in my mind, it was like he was sleeping.
"Well..." he began, seemingly avoiding my question.
As my eyes cut around the room, I was quick to notice a laptop at the end of the bed, and there seemed to be papers and folders littering the nearby table.
"Nick?" I turned my attention back to him, "how long?"
"Just...a couple weeks." He shrugged above me.
"A couple of weeks?" I repeated in disbelief. "What are you calling a couple!?" I remembered his penchant for not telling me the entire truth.
"Like...2 weeks..." he began, his eyes avoiding mine.
I stared up at him with slightly furrowed brows.
"Okay, 3." He sighed.
"3...3 weeks?" I sat up a little bit he put his hand on my chest and I fell back down into his lap.
My mind began to fizzle and race, what had happened to me? Why had my hair changed colors? What about my eyes? Were they back to normal? What about Neil? What had happened to him? Was he alright? I remember he said he was 17...but of course that was weeks ago now...he could've had his birthday already. Something shouted in me that he was only a month younger than me or something. I couldn't recall at that moment if I was right or wrong.
"Yes." He nodded a bit. "Just about 3 weeks."
"What day is it?" I asked immediately.
"August 5." He spoke lowly.
I sighed heavily. "What have I missed?"
"Uhm..." he scratched the back of his neck.
"What?" I repeated.
"You haven't missed too much...just Ramsey and Neil stuff." He spoke in a near whisper.
"Ramsey and Neil stuff?" I repeated again, "what kind of stuff!?" I demanded clearer answers.
"As you probably noticed, Ramsey appears to be Neil's mate." He shrugged.
"Uhm...Neil has not had his Test so you can't be sure. Neil is also 17, so it's impossible." I spoke faster than I thought I could.
"Well, Ramsey found him the old fashioned way." Nick leaned back a bit and started petting my hair.
"What the hell does that mean?" I felt some of my strength returning.
Nicks eyes widened a bit then softened with youthful laughter. "The old fashioned way, means that Ramsey was set off by Neil's scent, nothing more."
I raised an eyebrow.
"It's just when you find your mate based on scent." He chuckled a bit.
"Oh." I vocalized as the pieces in my mind fit together; "I still thought you had to be 18."
"Well..." Nick took a sharp breath.
"Oh don't you dare tell me-!" I started.
"Well it's not like we knew!" Nick defended himself, "Neil's age has always been a question, ever since he was a kid. His parents left him and we found him whittling in a corner. Very few of us knew how old he was, and we only figured that out when we stumbled upon his birth certificate last year. None of us knew he existed either until we found him. He was small and malnourished. I carried him to the doctor and we had a lot of tests done. They said he was an omega and badly malnourished. Had we not found him when we did he would've died shortly. The doctor only guessed at his age, I mean I suppose it's better that the doctor was only a year off as opposed to anymore." He shrugged. "Ramsey sensing that Neil was his mate when he did meant that Neil was already 18 then or it may have even been his birthday. We wouldn't know, we just guessed and gave him one."
I just stared in awe at him. It was a hell of a story and I couldn't help but feel bad for Neil. Life never seemed to give him anything good, and Neil seemed to deserve happiness more than most. Ramsey as his mate though, I was not so keen on.
