007 : playful new friendships
"LUNCH is the best part of the day," Jake exclaimed with an enthusiastic grin, his eyes lighting up with excitement as he practically bounced on his feet. There was something contagious about his energy; you couldn't help but feel a little happier just by being around him.
"Of course you would say that," Jay replied, rolling his eyes playfully, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. He leaned in and pinched Jake's cheeks, the gesture lighthearted but teasing. Jake quickly swatted Jay's hand away, a shy smile creeping onto his face as he felt his cheeks heat up.
"I work out, and you know that," Jake retorted, puffing out his chest in a way that he hoped looked confident, but the hint of a nervous laugh slipped through. His gaze flickered to the ground for a moment, and I couldn't help but notice how his shyness seemed to bubble up the longer we talked.
"I know, just teasing, little man," Jay laughed, ruffling Jake's hair with a playful touch before stepping back. Jake's face turned a deeper shade of red, and he let out a soft huff, brushing his hair down in embarrassment while glancing at me, his expression a mix of eagerness and bashfulness.
"So, um, how do you like the school so far?" Jake asked, his voice dropping a bit as he looked down at me, his shyness making him fidget with the hem of his shirt. I met his gaze for a moment, feeling that flutter in my chest, before looking ahead, trying to steady my own nerves.
"I like it so far. The school is pretty big, though," I replied, my tone friendly and casual as Jay and Jake nodded in agreement, their expressions thoughtful. The sprawling campus was indeed impressive, with its towering buildings and bustling hallways, but I appreciated the familiar faces that made it feel a bit like home.
As we made our way into the bustling cafeteria, the familiar sounds of laughter and chatter enveloped us like a warm blanket. The aroma of various foods wafted through the air, making my stomach rumble. We spotted our whole group sitting together at a large table, waving enthusiastically in our direction. Jake's face lit up at the sight, and he waved back, his previous nerves momentarily forgotten as he bounded over with a spring in his step.
I settled into my seat between Jake and Hanni, feeling a sense of comfort in the presence of friends. The cafeteria was alive with energy, and I could see other groups chatting animatedly, laughter erupting here and there. It was a place where friendships blossomed over shared meals and inside jokes.
"This is Eun-bi," Jake introduced, his voice a bit quieter than before, a hint of shyness returning as he pointed to me with a shy smile. He glanced at the guys I hadn't met yet, his cheeks tinged pink. "This is Sunoo, Sunghoon, and Heeseung." Each of them greeted me with a friendly wave, their expressions welcoming and warm, which made me feel a little more at ease.
"Jake ease up. Sorry Eun-bi he's always been awkward with girls. He has no game." Heeseung smirked as he teased Jake.
"Alright bro, let's talk about that girlfriend you have... oh wait you don't have one." He angrily took a bite of his food before they both started laughing to themselves.
"Here," Hanni said, her eyes sparkling as she handed me a sandwich with a bright smile that radiated warmth. I opened my mouth to politely refuse, feeling a bit self-conscious about my appetite, but she insisted, "Come on, bibi, it's your favorite." She wiggled the sandwich teasingly in front of me, and with a playful scoff and a smirk, I finally took it, biting into it with anticipation.
The moment the delicious flavors burst on my tongue, I was transported back to the last time I tasted one of Hanni's sandwiches. It had been years, and I had almost forgotten just how good they were. The bread was perfectly toasted, the fillings were fresh, and a delightful blend of flavors danced across my palate, making me close my eyes momentarily in bliss.
"Noona is dazed," Niki chimed in, resting his chin on his hand, his eyes glinting with amusement as he watched me savor the bite. The light-hearted banter from everyone around me made me feel warm and included.
I snapped out of my daze, suddenly aware of everyone looking at me, and I felt my cheeks flush. Jake chuckled softly, his warm grin spreading as he pulled me snugly against his side, ruffling my hair again in a friendly manner that made my heart skip a beat. I could feel my cheeks heating up even more, and I ducked my head, trying to hide my smile.
"She's adorable," Sunoo remarked, taking a bite of his food, his eyes twinkling with playful mischief. The comment made me blush even deeper, and I glanced down at my plate, overwhelmed by the warmth of the moment.
