004 : nervous

AS I FINISHED applying my makeup, I couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction with the outcome. My natural-looking makeup was just the right touch of cute I was going for. I took a moment to appreciate my long and full eyelashes, which were one of the features of my face that I truly loved. I had always felt grateful for my good genes, and I silently thanked my mom for passing them down to me.

Stepping back from the mirror, I took a good look at my outfit - it was my new school uniform. My mom had picked it up the day before my first day to ensure that I would fit in easily. The uniform was a crisp white shirt with a navy blue skirt that fell just above my knees. I had paired it with some classic black flats and a simple necklace. It was a comfortable yet stylish look that I was excited to show off on my first day at school.

I walked out of my room and saw my mom setting breakfast on the table. I took a seat as she did the same. I drank some orange juice before starting to eat my avocado toast.

"Don't be nervous, honey," she said, noticing how fast I was eating. I looked up at her, paused my chewing, and nodded, slowing down a bit.

"Perhaps some of your old middle school mates go to this high school," my mom continued, trying to ease my anxiety.

I hope not," I muttered under my breath. During my middle school years, I only had a few friends that I liked. Apart from them, all the girls hated me. I found it hard to make friends with both genders, but I wasn't particularly interested in befriending boys anyway. Every time a girl became my friend, we would have a great time until the boy they had a crush on began to show interest in me instead. Eventually, my friends would leave me, saying things like, "Guys only want you because you're pretty."

"Eun-bi?" My mom's sudden voice jolted me out of my thoughts, and I had to suppress a cough as a piece of food almost went down the wrong pipe. I took a sip of orange juice to clear my throat before responding to her.

"Sorry," I said, my voice still a little raspy. I put down my fork and looked at my mom who was sitting across from me at the table.

"I feel bad that you may not know anyone there," she said, her tone tinged with sadness as she looked down at her plate. I could tell that she was worried about me, and I knew that moving to a new place could be difficult. Despite her concern, I appreciated her words of comfort, and I was grateful for her support during this transition.

"I... I actually do know somebody." I said, trying to reassure my mom and ease her worries. She had been concerned about me being alone and not having any friends.

"That's good, who are they?" my mom asked, taking a bite out of her eggs.

"His name is Jake," I replied, taking a bite of my food as well. I could sense my mom's apprehension, but I hoped that she would be open-minded.

"A boy, huh?" my mom sighed, and I could tell that this only seemed to make her more worried. I could understand why she might be hesitant; after all, she wanted to protect me and keep me safe.

After breakfast, I slid my shoes on and grabbed my coat. "I'm heading out, Mom," I let her know. I could feel her eyes on me as I walked out the door, but I knew that I had to take this step and meet new people.

As I was getting ready to leave the house, my mom said, "Have fun baby, stay safe." I smiled back at her and waved before walking out and closing the door behind me.

I took out my phone and opened the GPS app, typing in the name of the school I was headed to. After a moment, the route popped up on the screen, showing that it would be a seven-minute walk. I let out a small sigh before putting in my earbuds and hitting play on my favorite playlist.

As I walked, I couldn't help but notice the beauty around me. The snow was falling softly, landing on my shoes and melting instantly. The cold winter air was crisp and refreshing, and I felt it kiss my face as I made my way down the street.

Just as I was really starting to enjoy the walk, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see a familiar face standing behind me. I paused my music and took out my AirPods, putting them back in their case.
