Chapter 9-Ashes and Blood

I sat outside the room. My hands shook as I touched my red hair. I was surprised it had yet to turn gray due to all the stress I had been facing lately.

"Winters finally getting to you?" I jumped already on the edge from watching the men die. I glanced at the newcomer with wide, frightened eyes. Adam Robb laughed at my reaction. It took me a moment to regain my composure.

"He got to me the moment I met him," I said bitterly.

Adam laughed loudly. "Think positive, darling. Things can only get better from here."

I didn't respond. I stared at the white hallway walls blankly.

"You alright?" He asked.

I laughed hollowly. "I haven't been in good company lately."

He sat down next to me. He rubbed his beard with his fingers. Then he put his left arm around me.

"As much as Brandon and I don't get along. I do think that those vampires should have been punished," he explained.

I glanced at him with surprise.

"I don't think they should have been punished this way though," he added.

He smiled reassuringly at me as he gripped me tighter. For the first time in a long while, I felt the warmth of friendship. I didn't feel as alone as I had the past year. I smiled back. It seemed as if all the problems of the world were gone.

Adam suddenly stopped smiling and removed his arm off me leaving me feeling bereft. He looked over, and I followed his glance to see Brandon eyeing us cooling.

"Winters," Adam said addressing Brandon.

Brandon's eyes darkened. He watched me carefully. I was no longer smiling. The sight of blood on his shirt sickened me slightly.

"Robb," Brandon replied briskly with narrowed eyes as he watched both of us. He quickly dismissed Adam. "Cassie. It is time to get to work. Let's go."

I nearly wept. I didn't want to go anywhere with him who knows what he would do next. Brandon Winters was too unpredictable.

"I think Cassie should get something to eat I'm sure she is starving," Adam told Brandon quietly.

I was thirsty I hadn't had a good decent drink since the guy had stole my stuff. I wasn't going to mention this to Brandon of course. He would probably try to get me to feed off an old woman this time.

I suddenly noticed how tense Brandon seemed. He looked like he was ready for a fight at any moment. He stood still, stiff, and straight. His eyes burned with hatred as he smiled that cold smile of his at Adam.

"You aren't paid to think. You are paid to act. Cassie is none of your concern. I'm her assigned sire not you," Brandon snapped.

Adam didn't reply. He just held Brandon's stare. The silence was awkward and tense as no one spoke.

"Let's go, Cassie," Brandon snapped once again as he broke the silence.

I didn't need to be told again. I followed Brandon all the way out of the building.

"Where are we going?" I asked Brandon.

"Hunting."

 My stomach tightened nervously. "For . . . ." I trailed off.

"Mushrooms. What the hell do you think? Food," he snapped.
