Emilie Bourne, born in August of 1954, was the youngest child in the Bourne family. They lived in the suburban neighborhood of Hazelwood in Pittsburgh, where wealth and stability characterized their upbringing. Emilie's parents, Johnson and Ann Bourne, provided a nurturing environment, though both were often preoccupied with their professional lives—Johnson as a dedicated Social Worker and Ann as a skilled Tailoress. Both parents, although present, created an atmosphere that at times felt isolating; the family often shared meals in silence, a stark contrast to the vibrancy of Emilie's burgeoning interests.
INTERVIEWER: When do you think your life truly began?
EMILIE BOURNE (Wife of Graham Dunne / Fashion Designer ): I had just gotten home from school, and the house was quiet, per usual. And I remember my older sister... Lisa said something about a house party. That's when I knew that it was going to start around there.
I had recently gotten into the Stone Poneys, Fleetwood Mac, The Delfonics, and The Five Stairsteps. Lisa introduced me to them. But the one she was talking about... I didn't have a clue who he was!

Emilie sat quietly at the dinner table. She had just gotten home late from school. She wished she had been born earlier and didn't have to be a teenager in the 60s. She had been playing with her food for a while, as the whole family had been eating their food in silence. It was late, and the only sounds came from a few neighborhood kids practicing in their garage, their laughter and melodies a bittersweet reminder of Emilie's own sense of isolation.
Lisa cleared her throat. She had just turned 21 a few months ago, but could never keep a steady job. Emilie glanced her eyes at Lisa, lifting her brows, wondering what she had to say. Lisa had looked from her mother, then to Ann, and then to her father, Johnson. She had mumbled something out to try and get their attention. They didn't notice.
Their parents had always been busy, so the two grew up without each parent, but when their parents were both home with the two girls, they still felt very alone. "Emilie, have you done your schoolwork yet?" Ann inquired without looking up, absently wiping her mouth with a linen napkin. Ann was a poised woman, with a deep appreciation for classic Jazz—a stark contrast to the rock influences consuming her daughters' lives. Emilie nodded her head before she let out, "Yes, mother," so very softly. Ann smiled before Johnson let a question out for Lisa.
"Lisa, have you found another job yet?" Johnson asked, a very rude tone in his wording, leaving Lisa to roll her eyes, "I'm working on it." Lisa replied, the same way Johnson said with that same tone. Johnson sighed before he stood up, walking to the sink being done with his food.
Emilie watched her dad walk away from the kitchen to upstairs, where he had slammed the door shut. Lisa sighed before she looked to Emilie, as the youngest Bourne looked back at Lisa, she gave a smile. "Mom. I got invited to this... house party thing, from this famous rockstar, and since I'm 21... I was wondering if I could go." Lisa explained as she took everyone's dishes from the table. As she collected the dishes, her words finally drew Ann's attention. Ann's wide eyes reflected both surprise and judgment. She clicked her tongue before she stood up. The woman's consideration took a while, thinking about it.
