"MOM, what do you mean?" I asked, furrowing my brow and regarding her with a mix of surprise and confusion, my eyes searching hers for some explanation.
"I've transferred you to a new school. You've been complaining about seeing your ex-boyfriend in the halls at school so I fixed it," she replied, her tone firm yet laced with a softness that spoke of understanding.
I hesitated, caught between conflicting emotions. The prospect of starting over at a new school loomed dauntingly ahead. On the other hand, my current school had become a toxic environment filled with people I'd rather avoid. "Thanks, Mom," I said, managing a soft smile as I leaned in to place a tender kiss on her cheek.
Returning my smile, she reached out and rubbed my shoulder gently. "You start tomorrow, honey," she said, offering a nod before departing from the living room and disappearing into the kitchen.
As the quiet minutes ticked by, I decided to head out for another visit to the café.
"Mom, I'm heading out to the café," I announced, slipping into my coat.
"Alright, be safe Eun-bi," my mother replied, her eyes meeting mine with a mixture of warmth and concern. I nodded in response, donning my coat and shoes before stepping through the front door.
The familiar bite of winter air greeted me as I made my way through the snow-dusted streets, lost in thought about my impending transition to a new school. I found myself at the café before I even realized it, colliding with someone as I approached the entrance.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry," I exclaimed as I stumbled back, meeting the concerned gaze of the person I'd bumped into.
"Hey, you're the girl from a week ago," he said, pointing at me as he reached out a hand to help me up. I took his hand, and memories of our previous encounter flooded back.
"You're that nice worker," I said, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. He nodded, a friendly grin lighting up his features. He's undeniably attractive.
"Let's go back in for hot cocoa, my treat," he suggested, almost forgetting that we were still holding hands. "Ah, sorry," he added, releasing my hand and bowing slightly. Blushing, I followed him through the doors, feeling the rush of warm air and the rich scent of coffee envelop me.
Seated at a table, he spoke up. "I didn't catch your name last time," he said, prompting me to introduce myself.
"I'm Cha Eun-bi," I said, offering a shy smile.
He nodded, returning the smile. "I'm Sim Jaeyun, but everyone calls me Jake," he said, exuding a contagious positive energy that put me at ease.
Relaxing into my seat, I found myself drawn to his amiable nature. "I hope you don't mind me stealing you for a bit. I just wanted to check on you. You seemed down the last time you visited, plus I got off work just now," he explained, his words carrying a hint of endearing awkwardness. I nodded in response, feeling somewhat tongue-tied.
"Oh, I forgot to order, give me a minute," he said, flashing an embarrassed smile before hurrying off. As he walked away, I took a deep breath, feeling my cheeks grow warm. I've always been prone to getting flustered easily.
When he returned with two hot chocolates and a cake pop, he noticed my unease. "Everything okay?" he asked, his eyes reflecting genuine concern. Placing a cup in front of me and the cake pop, he waited for my response.
"Thank you," I said, offering a soft smile before opening up. "I'm moving to a new school," I sighed, the weight of the impending change settling heavily on my shoulders once again.
"Oh, what school?" Jake inquired, his gaze radiating reassurance.
"Gwangju High School," I replied, pursing my lips feeling anxious just at the thought of starting at a new school.
"No way. I go there!" he exclaimed, his excitement contagious as a wave of relief washed over me.
"What grade?" I asked, silently hoping that we'd be in the same year. The reason I'm hoping we are is because I don't want to be alone at my new school. I want to have someone that I can talk to instead of being a loner, Plus, I struggle to make friends.
"Junior," he answered, his eyes mirroring my hope as he gave off a shy exterior.
"Me too." Despite us being calm, we were both excited on the inside.
"You'll fit in great. Don't worry," Jake reassured me before steering the conversation toward lighter topics. "Do you have any hobbies?" he asked, taking a sip of his hot cocoa.
"I like to play basketball, dance, and sing," I said, feeling happy that I have one thing to be excited about and that's the thought of meeting new teammates at my upcoming school.
"Wow, we have a few things in common already. You need to teach me how to play basketball." He grinned, taking a sip out of his hot cocoa.
I nodded in reply before speaking up. "So how about you? What are your hobbies?" I questioned.
"I like to sing, dance, play soccer, and I can't think of any other right now." He laughed sheepishly.
"We do have things in common," I mumbled under my breath as I looked at him, drinking my hot cocoa.
