Chapter Two

As soon as Anna got back from the book signing she had to go to, she headed

straight to her bathroom to brush her hair out. Her publisher had sent a

convertible, and the wind did some serious damage to her hair. As soon as her

copper brown, shoulder length hair was pin straight, she took off the ten pounds

of makeup they had put on her. Finally, when she could see her real skin, she

took a long, much needed shower. After towel drying and dressing in her night

clothes, she checked her author's website for any messages.

A few minutes after she started a reply message, she heard a loud thud. She

turned around to see her empty mug from this morning all the way across the

room. Her heart began to pound a little faster.

How did that happen? Getting up to grab the mug, goosebumps raised on her skin.

Okay, she thought, this is weird. Then, a huge breeze went through the room.

Anna went to close the window, but she found that it was already closed. She

spun to look behind her- no one else was in her room.

She shook her head- trying to clear it. She then set the mug back on her table,

and dialed her Dad's phone number on her land-line. It rung once, twice, three

times, he finally answered.

“Hey, Ann,” Her Dad's familiar voice said, “I was worried you weren't going to

call.” Anna smiled and rolled her eyes.

“No, I've just been busy. Writing and what not,” Anna replied. She looked over

her shoulder again. This house is really starting to creep me out, she thought.

“Do you like your new house?” Anna's Dad asked sadly. Ever since her parents

divorce, her Dad had been a wreck. He still loved her Mom.

I hate it. “It's nice, Dad. It's...spacious”

“Is your mother okay? I know she hates moving...”

“She's okay, Dad. She's in the living room right now if you want to talk to

her.” Anna prompted.

“No, that's okay. I have to go anyway. Love you, Ann.” Anna sighed.

“Love you too, Dad.”

The line went dead and Anna set the phone down. She took her coffee mug

downstairs, then grabbed a bottle of water.

“I'm going to bed, Mom!” She called while heading up the stairs.

“Night!” Her mother replied. Anna shut off the lights and jumped on her bed. As

soon as her head hit the pillow, she was out.

Anna woke up in the middle of the night, again, to a loud crash. She groaned and

rubbed her eyes open to see her lamp had fallen off of her desk onto the wooden

floor. She threw the blankets off of her and picked up the now broken lamp.

Her eyes traveled from the floor to the desk, then back again, wondering what on

earth pushed the lamp over. Anna looked around the room, puzzled.

Anna snapped her head to the door when she heard a knock. “Come in...” She said

carefully.

“Are you okay?” Her mother asked. “I heard a loud crash.”

“Just the stupid lamp. It fell over!” Anna exclaimed. She still had an

unbelieving look on her face.

“Stop horsing around and go to sleep!” Anna's mom left the room.

“I wasn't horsing around.” Anna whispered. Chills crawled up her back and she

shuddered. What's happening around here? Anna asked herself. Anna crawled back

into bed and pulled the covers over her head. It had gotten freezing cold. She

looked at her bedside thermometer to see that that room temperature had reached

fifty nine degrees. What? This is definitely not normal.

Shrugging deeper into her bed, she finally feel asleep.

11-15-11 Approximately 5:40 a.m.

Diary,

This house isn't normal. No way the house temperature can drop that low when

it's eighty degrees outside! It's insane! I'm scared. Something last night threw

my lamp off of my desk- but I should have been the only one in my room. I want

answers. I'm starting to maybe think- stupid, I know- that it's spiritual...

Ugh! That's so dumb!

~Anna

Anna threw her pen against the wall- frustrated. This was so stupid. She

shouldn't be scared in her own home! She watched the pen leave a small dot in

the wall, then fall to the floor. Getting up from her swivel chair, she put on

her bath robe and headed for the bathroom.

Turning the water to almost boiling hot, and putting the shower head on it's

highest setting, she relaxed all her muscles and told her self that nothing was

wrong with this house. It's just drafty, as I said before.

As soon as the water went cold she stepped out of the steamy bathroom and

dressed in a gray short sleeved dress- her favorite dress. Feeling good about

her outfit, she pulled her damp hair into a ponytail and bounded up stairs.

The third floor was kind of like an Attic. It was just one huge room, but it was

renovated to be a music room. Anna spotted her violin and headed over to it.

Checking the tune of it, she played her favorite song What About Now by

Daughtry. After that, she went through a few of her own compositions. Content,

she set the instrument down and left the room smiling. That was before she saw

something cross her peripheral vision. She whipped her head around, but that

shadow stayed in her peripheral vision. Her breath hitched in her throat.

“Hello?” She barely whispered. She was answered with a soft buzzing noise. Her

heard was going a million miles a minute. “Mom?”

She heard quiet footfalls. Like the footfalls of a cat. Anna's eyes darted

everywhere, searching for where the intruding animal was. Spinning in all

directions, the black spot still remained where she couldn't fully see it. Then,

the buzzing went away, and all sounds stopped. The house was eerily quiet. The

only sound Anna heard was her own heart pounding in her head.

Not. Normal.
