____________________________________The Three Sisters.
Those three apartment buildings were like something out of a horror movie. Seeing them in real life was even worse, especially at night. We finally arrived at Vera's block after about four or five minutes of minutes, it wasn't too far from the entrance.
On the way way there, you could hear gunshots in the distance, fights and yelling from different houses, and if you looked down the wrong alley, you may see someone getting mugged.
The yelling from one house in particular got my attention.
It was a man and a woman arguing, really going at each other with words that I would feel sick repeating.
What stood out, was what they were arguing about."You promised that you would take care of me, take care of us!" The woman yelled.
There were more gunshots.
"Instead we live in this neighbourhood where people die just by going to store!"
More gunshots.
I kept walking. The area was also very poorly lit, the only thing illuminating the litter covered tar road were the orangey florescent street lights.
I held onto my future lover's waist, supporting her as we took every step. She walked like a weak, newborn deer and to be honest, I didn't know for how much longer I'd be able to hold her.
"Charlie." Vera spoke up, breaking the silence that had been following us since the cab.
"Yes?"
"If anybody tries to do anything," She was speaking slowly, her eyes barely open as her head hung low, "Just lift my head and show my face, okay?"
"Okay."I was close to believing that nothing would happen, but just before we could reach the buildings, a black-clad man jumped out of a bush holding a knife.
I reacted quickly, immediately lifting Vera's head like she had instructed. In retrospect, that may not have been one of the best logical decisions in that very moment.
For example, What if he didn't know who Vera was? Or what if he just didn't care, and would attack us anyway? But this wasn't my world, and I didn't want to lose my life or end up traumatised if I could simply just have followed an instruction.
And so, I did as I was told.Immediately the man stopped, his face covered in a ski mask.
His scary demeanour immediately changed, and I could see the evil glint in his eyes disappear as they instead shut as he smiled, forming slight eye wrinkles."Oh, Viper, Shit my fault." He laughed, as if he wasn't ready to stab one, or both of us, seconds prior.
Vera opened one eye slightly, "Santiago, Take your stupid ass home. It's late, And you got school tomorrow."School? No way, He was really tall with a scarily deep voice. I would've thought that he was at least two years older than me.
"C'mon Vipes, you know I'm tryna make enough for rent." The m̶a̶n̶ boy, presumably named, Santiago, complained. Suddenly, His voice sounded incredibly whiny.
"Not at this time, go home." She ordered.
He sighed, "Fine." He turned to me and held out his hand, "I'm Santiago, by the way. Sorry about earlier."
I shook his hand reluctantly, "Charlie, And no problem..."We parted ways and once we had gotten to Vera's block, I finally was able to take it all in.
Where I was, What I was doing. It was really fucking scary and I would be lying if I said it didn't feel like my heart was going to pop and pump out of my mouth at any second.
The Three Sisters were nicknamed after the Wilson girls.
Literally, three sisters.
The eldest was 19, the middle child was 15 and the youngest was 13.
