The rain-soaked air and scent of trees filled the truck as you navigated the winding road, the tires crunching on the gravel beneath. Beside you, Emma hummed along to a tune on the radio, her fingers tapping lightly on the steering wheel.
Mac Demarco was playing. My Kind of Woman.
(A/N: dawg I fucking love Mac Demarco, I've seen him live twice.)
Emma: "I really missed your taste in music."
(Y/N): "That's all you missed? You didn't miss my roguish charms and chad-like aura?"
Emma: "Not as much as you probably think."
You raise your brow and side eye Emma, who only bursts out laughing at your reaction.
It had been over a year since you'd seen Johnny and Craig, and you were pleasantly surprised when they both agreed to go camping on such short notice. The four of you hadn't been together since high school.
Glancing over at Emma, you couldn't help but smile. Her brown eyes held a warmth that mirrored the sunlight filtering through the trees, and her laughter echoed through the truck, music to your ears. You honestly didn't know how you managed a year away from her, and you couldn't imagine going back.
As the trees thickened around the truck, you felt a wave of nostalgia wash over you. The familiar landmarks, the bends in the road – all signalled the proximity of the camping spot you had all frequented during your high school years. Your thoughts drifted to Johnny and Craig, wondering how much had changed in their lives over the past year.
The anticipation built with each passing mile, and as they neared the secluded spot, you couldn't shake the butterflies in your stomach. The engine purred as Emma expertly navigated the final stretch of the journey, and through the dense foliage, you caught a glimpse of the familiar clearing where they used to set up camp, as well as the lake. It was private property, but you weren't entirely sure why. No one had lived in the house in years.
Emma: "We're almost there."
Her voice broke through your reverie.
Emma: "Stop doing that."
(Y/N): "Doing what?"
Emma: "Spacing out. You've done it like ten times on this drive alone."
(Y/N): "Just reliving the glory days in my head."
As you reached the final turn, you spotted Johnny's dad old, beaten car pulled up further ahead, albeit slightly changed. It was worn and had various lewd bumper stickers adorning the back. Emma pulls up behind the car, and in an instant, you are out the door and approaching the car ahead, gravel crunching beneath your boots.
You spot the back of a head. Familiar, long shaggy blonde hair sat in the drivers seat as you approached the window and knocked on it.
(Y/N): "You drive now? That's fucking terrifying."
The two of you stare in silence for a few seconds before he bursts out laughing, exiting the car and bro-hugging you.
Johnny: "Holy shit dude, you haven't changed at all!"
(Y/N): "It's been a year, realistically. What were you expecting? A divorced man with 3 kids and a mortgage?"
Johnny: "A smartass college dweeb with a stick up his ass."
You wrap your arm around his neck and begin to give him a noogie. After various punches to the gut, you stop and let him go before turning around and taking in the view before you.
The lake hadn't changed at all. It's still exactly how you remembered it all. It even had the faint scorch marks where you used to set up your campfires.
