The next day, Yuki and I took a trip to the hospital where I made an appointment for the official pregnancy test. We borrowed Aisha’s car and arrived at the hospital in half an hour. The waiting room was packed as usual and it was agonizing waiting to be called.
Children ran around the waiting room and parents yelled after them. Toys were strewn across the floors and the TV only showed kid shows. Yuki and I exchanged a glance that said: This is what’s in store for us and we better get used to it. Honestly, it annoyed the shit out of me. Everything was too loud and the smell of antiseptic was making me nauseas. By the time they called my name I was about ready to tear my hair out.
“Jazmaine Hayze?” called a nurse in pink scrubs.
“Right here,” I said standing up.
“Come on back,” she said.
I grabbed Yuki’s hand and pulled him along with me. We were told to wait again in a private room and that the doctor would be coming a few minutes. There was a knock at the door and in walked the doctor. I requested a female doctor just in case they had to look places that I wouldn’t be comfortable with a male, other than Yuki, looking.
“Alright, why don’t we get started,” she said washing her hands briskly.
“Hop up on the table here.”
I laid down and she felt my stomach, asked me a series of personal questions, and made me pee in a cup. Once I came back with my cup full of pee she asked a whole new set of questions which were even more personal.
“How old are you?”
“I’ll be sixteen in a month,” I said.
“How long have you two been together?”
This lady was all business. She barely took a breath between questions and wrote down practically everything I said to her. She hadn’t pointed any questions in a Yuki’s direction since she got there.
“When was the last time you had sexual intercourse?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“Did you use protection?”
“No,” I said.
As a doctor you shouldn’t judge people but I could already tell she was judging me. She jotted down a few notes and said she’d take my urine sample to the lab. She told us the test results wouldn’t be in for two hours at the least and a day at the most. Our best bet was to come back the following day for the results and we agreed that would be the easiest.
The following day we got the call that said the results were ready and we ventured back to the hospital. This time it was a different doctor that saw us and thankfully she wasn’t judgmental. Her assistant was supposedly getting the test results from the lab and in the meantime she provided me with pre-natal vitamins and performed an ultrasound.
“Now keep in mind it’s really early in the pregnancy so the fetus will look pretty weird,” she said.
“How weird? Like an alien?” asked Yuki. (Just like a boy.)
“Yes, pretty much.”
“Oh. It’s gonna look better though right?” he asked.
“Eventually, yes.” She laughed at this question.
