"No way!" You were standing on your tippy toes with a book in one hand and pen in the other, marking Tenko's height on the wall. An annoyed sigh left your lips as you shot a glare at him.
"What?" Tenko said holding in his laugh, as a giggle came out.
"You've grown so much taller in less than a year, it isn't fair!" You whined.
Tenko smiled, pointing towards the lower marks on the wall. "We used to be around the same height. It's not my fault that you're so short."
This only made you angrier even more. "It's okay Y/N, you'll grow soon." He said, patting your head as he spoke.
"Tenko! y/n!" Tenko's mom voice called from downstairs, "It's dinner time!"
Tenko grabbed your hand and you both ran out the bedroom and down the stairs.
At the table, Tenko's sister was already there as well as his dad. He looked up a slight snarl formed as his eyes landed on you.
"Mom guess what! I've grown 2 inches taller than y/n." Tenko exclaimed, full of enthusiasm, pulling a chair as he teased you.
"Why is she still here?" Kotaro Shimura, his dad, interrupted as he grabbed a pair of chopsticks, "She has a home doesn't she? I think it's about time she heads back."
You instantly turned to look at him. "Ah, I apologize, Ms.Shimura invited me over, I thought it was fine to stay. I'll head over now."
Your apologetic tone made Tenko soft, "No! Mom and I invited you, please stay."
The thud of chopsticks slamming on the table was heard. Mr.Shimura turned his head, annoyed at his son's behavior.
"Dear please," Ms. Shimura spoke, "Her parents still aren't home and it's late. She needs to eat."
The head of the household took a deep breath before returning back to his meal. He hated your parents and you knew that. Since you weren't financially well, your parents always looked for day to day jobs to take using their quirks, and Mr.Shimura considered you and them a bunch of lowly bums who lived off dreams and illusions.
You thanked Ms.Shimura for the meal, and ate in silence as Tenko grabbed your hand underneath the table. An assurance he always did whenever you were scared or worried.
You didn't know it yet, but Tenko resentment toward his father had started already. And the way he treated you only made him dislike him even more.
Shortly the mom started asking Tenko's sister, Hana, how school went.
"I'll walk you home after." Tenko whispered to you as you took a bite of your food. "This way we can stay together a little longer."
"I live far, you should stay." You muttered, making sure Tenko's dad didn't hear you, "And stop coming over in the morning, your dad will get mad if he finds out you wait for me everyday before school, it isn't safe where I live."
But Tenko didn't take no for an answer. And you felt him give your hand a gentle squeeze, "I don't care what he think, I'll keep waiting and looking out for you. In fact, I wanna do it as long as you let me. That's what a hero does."
He whispered the 'hero' word even softer. Because you both knew exactly how Tenko's dad felt about heroes.
You smiled. Even though you were only a kid, you still understood how lucky you were to have met Tenko in this lifetime. He was kind, patient and the bravest person you knew.
