TOMMY: You're calling all the shots, boss. You tell me where you think I should start.

( 1967 - 1970 )

Thomas William Ratliff, Jr, known professionally as Tommy Ratliff, was born in San Diego, California on November 9, 1950. He was an only child, as his mother passed away shortly after his birth.

TOMMY: Pops did his best. ( laughs ) He actually bought me my first guitar.

Tommy struggled with dyslexia, which he wouldn't be officially diagnosed until the 90's, and often struggled in school. By the time he was sixteen, he had dropped out.

INTERVIEWER: What did your Dad think about you dropping out of school?

TOMMY: Well, I mean, of course he wasn't happy about it. But, I was gonna do it anyway and I think he knew that.

You know, if I hadn't dropped out, I never would've met Rex and the guys.

Rex Townsend, a London-born bass guitarist living in La Jolla, California, was in his early 20's when he first met Tommy Ratliff.
