Love vs. Lust
“What’s wrong?” I asked as I pulled open my bedroom door and looked up at Conner. He had a very strange expression on his face, causing me to panic even more.
“What is it?” Cole demanded, coming to a stand beside me. Conner hesitated for a second before answering, it looked like he was debating with himself over something
“It’s the hospital, they’re on the phone,” Conner answered, looking from me to Cole.
My heart sank in my chest as I pushed passed him and ran to the kitchen where our home telephone was. The receiver was lying on the counter so I grabbed a hold of it and pressed it to my ear. As I did this Cole and Conner came rushing into the kitchen.
“Hello,” I said, unsure of what was going on.
“Is that Gabby speaking?” an unfamiliar voice asked.
“Yes it is,” I replied.
“This is Dr. Smithson from Greenwood hospital, I believe that you are the person I should talk to about Gordon Carlson,” he half stated half asked, looking for confirmation.
“That is correct,” I stated, tensing up at the mention of Gordon’s name.
“There has been a change in his condition, could you maybe come in so that we can talk?” Dr. Smithson asked.
“Of course, I’ll be there as soon as possible,” I answered, unsure of how to feel. The doctor said there was a change but he didn’t say if it was for the better or worse.
“Good, just ask for me when you get here,” he stated.
“Ok, thank you doctor,” I said and then hung up.
I turned around and looked over to where Cole and Conner were standing. Both were staring at me expectantly.
“There’s been a change in his condition, the doctor wants me to go see him,” I said, answering there unasked question.
“What exactly do you mean by a change in his condition?” Conner asked, looking worried.
“I don’t know, he didn’t say,” I replied, feeling dazed. This night was turning out to be very confusing.
Conner nodded his head in understanding while Cole just looked at me with a pained expression on his face. I knew what he was thinking because I was thinking the same thing. What if Gordon woke up? What am I going to do?
I just stood there staring at the two of them for a second before taking a deep breath and preparing myself for what I had to do next.
“I have to go to the hospital,” I stated. They didn’t reply, obviously waiting for me to tell them what I was planning on doing.
“Cole” I said, looking straight at him
“Yeah?” he replied, his voice thick with worry.
“Will you take me?” I asked, hoping this wasn’t too much to ask of him. He looked surprised but answered immediately.
“Yes, of course I will,” he said, smiling sadly at me.
“Thanks,” I whispered as I walked closer to him and wrapped my arms around him. He hugged me back immediately, making me feel better instantly.
I don’t know how long we stood there holding each other but when I finally pulled away we went to my room to get my purse and Cole’s car keys. Conner looked really worried so I assured him that I’ll be fine and then we left.
I could tell that Cole was battling with the situation so as he drove I moved my hand onto his leg. He looked down at it and then took a hold of it in his one hand, keeping the other on the staring wheel. We didn’t speak at all but I could tell that he felt better after I did that.
When we reached the hospital I could feel myself growing more and more nervous. I had no idea what the change in Gordon’s condition was and to be completely honest, I was terrified of finding out.
Cole walked into the hospital with me but pulled me to a stop inside the waiting area.
“Do you want me to wait here for you?” he asked, looking unsure. I thought about his question for a second but it didn’t take me long to make up my mind.
“No, I mean, you can if it’ll be easier for you but I’d like it if you would come with me,” I answered. I wasn’t sure what he would prefer so when he squeezed my hand and led me over to the reception desk I pleasantly surprised.
“I’m here to see Dr. Smithson,” I said to the woman sitting behind the counter.
“Who may I say is asking for him?” she asked, not looking very interested at all. I didn’t blame her though, it must be a really crappy job.
“Tell him it’s Gabby, I’m here to talk to him about Gordon Carlson,” I replied, trying to stay calm as I spoke his name. The woman picked up her telephone and dialed number one on the speed dial.
“Dr. Smithson, I’ve got a young lady by the name of Gabby who wants to see you.” There was a short moment of silence but it felt like a lifetime before she spoke again.
“Ok, bye,” she said and then hung up.
“You can take a seat, he’ll be with you shortly,” she stated, looking up at me.
“Thanks,” I said, smiling weakly before turning around and pulling Cole over to some empty chairs.
“Are you ok?” he asked as we sat down.
“I’m nervous,” I replied, turning so that I was looking at him.
“You don’t have to be, I’ll be here for you no matter what happens,” he stated.
“I know,” I replied, laying my head on his shoulder. He wrapped his one arm around me and that is how we sat until Dr. Smithson appeared a few minutes later.
“I’m sorry I kept you waiting,” he said as he came to a stand in front of us. He was an old man with a white beard and glasses. He looked much friendlier then the young doctor I had spoken to the last time I was here.
“It’s ok,” I stated as I got to my feet. The doctor introduced himself as the hospitals neurologist and then asked us to follow him to his office.
