What Does BDSM Stand For?

The acronym 'B.D.S.M.' is overlapping (BD, DS,DM) and broadly covers what BDSM mostly involves.

B/D

This stands for Bondage and Discipline. This represents the more rigid side of the relationship between Dom and Sub. Dominance is the Dom setting rules (within the comfort of the Sub) and the Sub follows them or gets punished. Bondage is the activities restricting the Sub.

D/S

This stands for Dominance and Submission. This is the description for each of the players in the scene. It is a broad definition for the type of person playing. Also more known in the public as "Top and Bottom". Whether a person is a Dom or a Sub usually has little to do with how they are in the real world. Sometimes a real world boss likes to be out of control for a while, and sometimes they get a thrill of the ultimate control. The same might be true for a person who is more submissive in the real world. Generally it is hard to guess whether or not a real world personality will be a Dom or Sub in the bedroom.

S/M

This stands for Sadism and Masochism. Sadism is when a person gets enjoyment out of another persons discomfort or pain, and masochism is when a person derives pleasure from their own discomfort or pain. These are complex feelings and it is important to understand the difference between what is an acceptable amount of either.
