Chapter 46

Dahlia turned around and caught sight of Olive climbing out of his cell, into the hall. He extended his hand to her, either to carry Jenna or to help her though, she wasn't sure, but she wasn't about to trust him yet. Kicking of her heels so that she was barefoot, Dahlia hopped carefully back outside, clutching Jenna to her chest.

"Some things never change," Olive said with a grin. "A covert operation in high heels and a dress? Come on, Dahlia you should know better now."

Dahlia childishly stuck her tongue out at him although she was very glad to see him. He looked rather worse for the wear since she had last seen him though; he was much thinner and had lost quite a bit of his muscle; his dark hair was longer and matted and he had quite a few nasty scars. One cut on his cheek looked raw and fresh. Although he tried to conceal it, Dahlia immediately detected the limp in his left leg.

"Dear cripes," Dahlia said, staring at him. "What did Varmer do to you?"

"Don't worry about it," Olive said, wincing as he put weight on his left leg. "Let me carry her; we should get out of here as soon as possible. It's very likely that someone heard the explosion."

"We can't get out!" Dahlia protested. "I've told you that we've got no way out of here. Plus, I need to find the immortals, Ella, August and Verne. Do you know where they are?"

Olive shook his head. "Varmer's been torturing us separately for almost seven months. I have no idea where they are, much as I wish I did."

Dahlia grimaced. She would have to go down the whole prison block and search through each room; she also had no idea which cells they might be imprisoned in. She lifted Jenna higher and hurried to the next door. Olive limped after her, struggling to keep his balance.

As Dahlia rounded the corner, she immediately jerked back, flattening herself against the wall. Olive followed suit, trying to keep as quiet as possible. Fortunately for both of them, no traps appeared to swallow them up as they touched the wall.

On the other side of the wall, about fifty magicians were marching up in strict formation. The front few were talking animatedly.

"Let's take the squad to the portal," one male magicians said. "Then we should wait for Varmer's next orders."

                A portal!

Dahlia tiptoed away from the wall and dragged Olive after her. He followed her, trying to keep as quiet as possible. The next words chilled Dahlia to the bone and made her freeze to the spot in fear. Olive also stopped when she did, both of them listening intently to the other magician.

"Hang on," one other magician interrupted. "Someone's here." There was a brief pause and then the same guy spoke up again. "Two prisoners escaped!"

Dahlia grabbed Olive's arm and ran, forgetting to be quiet or subtle. As they fled, footsteps chased after them, faster than either Dahlia or Olive could run; Dahlia was burdened with Jenna and Olive was impaired by his injured leg.
