Toronto 2nd-Texas 4th in AL wild-card race

Hyun-jin Ryu seeks four wins in third season

The "Korean Monster," Hyun-jin Ryu (36-Toronto Blue Jays), will start against Max Scherzer (39), arguably the best pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB), in a series against the Texas Rangers that could be a watershed moment for the team's postseason hopes.

Toronto will host Texas for a four-game home series from April 12-15 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Toronto will send Chris Bassett, Hyun-jin Ryu, Yusei Kikuchi, and Kevin Gausman to the mound for the four-game series against Texas.

Ryu will start against Texas at 8:07 a.m. on April 13. Texas will start with Scherzer. This four-game series against Texas is very important for Toronto. It's a series that could define fall baseball.

In the American League (AL) wild card standings, Toronto is second with 80 wins and 63 losses, while Texas is fourth with 78 wins and 64 losses. The third place finisher in the wild card standings punches their ticket to the postseason.

With Toronto looking to finish second and Texas hoping for a top-three finish, this series will be a battle to the death.

Hyun-jin Ryu will try to win four games for the third time this season.

After returning from an elbow injury early last month, Hyun-jin Ryu won three consecutive games from Aug. 14 against the Chicago Cubs to Aug. 27 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he went winless in his first two starts in September.

In his last outing, he gave up two runs on five hits (one home run) in five innings with five strikeouts and one walk in a loss to the Oakland Athletics.

The question is whether or not Ryu, who has a history of being a big game pitcher, will be able to do the same in this series.

The Texas offense is no slouch.

Through 11 games, Texas is leading the AL in team batting average (.266) and team runs scored (777). They also lead the league in team OPS (on-base percentage + slugging percentage) at .791 and are fifth in team home runs with 200.

Adolis Garcia, who has 34 home runs and 100 RBIs, is the biggest target. Ryu's former LA Dodger teammate Corey Seager, who is second on the team in home runs (30) and first in OPS (1.050), is another to watch out for.

The Texas lineup has a lot of power, with all nine starters hitting double-digit home runs.Ryu, who relies on his fastball more than his breaking ball, will need to show more control to shut down the Texas offense.

In his four road starts since returning, Ryu has gone 1-1 with a 1.89 ERA, but has struggled a bit at home, going 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA. His BABIP is also slightly higher at home (0.259) than on the road (0.186).

The key will be if Toronto's offense can get to Scherzer.

Traded to Texas from the New York Mets at the trade deadline in late July, Scherzer has pitched more consistently since his arrival.

After going 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA in 19 starts with the Mets, Scherzer is 3-2 with a 3.63 ERA in seven starts in a Texas uniform. Compared to his time with the Mets, his batting average dropped from 0.240 to 0.175 and his walks allowed per inning (WHIP) dropped from 1.19 to 0.98.
