THE ONE WE HAVE ALL WANTED FROM THE VERY START OF THE BOOK
STOEY TALKING SCENE - YOU MAY LIKE HOW IT GOES, AND YOU MAY NOT
~ ~ ~
I walk over a fallen tree branch, going through the quiet forest.
I don't want to have to go back, but I know I do.
They need me.
I don't need them, though.
I hear a twig snap behind me, rolling my eyes.
"What do you want, Steve?" I ask loudly.
"How did you know it was me?" Steve asks. Hearing his voice makes my stomach quiver ever so slightly.
"Fury can't move, Natasha and Maria wouldn't make a sound, I have no idea who Sam is or how he fights. Besides," I look over my shoulder, finally making eye contact with him. "I knew you'd come after me."
He doesn't reply, so I turn back around and continue walking, knowing that he's following.
"So," He begins casually, "How have you been?"
"Good." I look around at the forest, "I had a normal job, I knew normal people, I lived in a normal apartment in a normal neighbourhood."
"I'm sorry it didn't work out." He says earnestly, always so polite.
"Yes, well." I shrug, "I'm not exactly normal."
"That's not a bad thing." He says surely.
"Isn't it?" I look up at him, "I wasn't hurting anyone; I only wanted peace."
"You won't get that from killing Pierce." He tells me.
"It's a start." I mutter, "He took away everything that ever mattered to me."
"What do you mean?" Steve asks in confusion, "You've never even met him."
"Steve, don't you get it?" I say slowly, looking up at him. "Pierce, he's in charge of HYDRA."
"I know he is." He nods.
"And HYDRA, one of their cover names is ARROW." I tell him, "Pierce, he's the Archer."
"Oh, Zoey." A dawning look sets upon his face, "I'm so sorry."
He goes to take a step towards me, but I take one away from him.
"I'm not asking for your pity. I'm not going to get any peace if Pierce is alive." I shake my head, "But I know I'll definitely sleep easy knowing that he's six feet fucking under."
"What?" Steve is taken aback by my words, and I smile cruelly.
"What, you don't like the new me?" I ask in a condescending tone, "I'm not the innocent girl you fell in love with."
"No, you're still Zoey." He insists, "I still love you."
"Your mistake." I say lightly, looking away.
"No, it wasn't." He protests, "You were there for me when I came out of the ice; I was so alone, you were the only light in my dark life. I trusted you with my life, and you came through."
"Do you still trust me?" I ask him, "If it came down to me saving your life, would you trust me to do it?"
"I would." He says earnestly.
I smile sadly, turning around and walking over to him.
I stand barely inches away from him, looking up at the man who can still give me butterflies against my will with a single glance.
