"Do I really have to go with you?"
"Yes you do Leah."
"Why?" I ask very seriously. I really didn't want to go with my mom to her company. She's always trying to get me to go and I always find the perfect excuse not to go, but unfortunately today was not my lucky day.
"Leah please, maybe if you go then you might change your mind about becoming a teacher."
There it is! The real reason she wants me to go with her. She's been talking about how I should go into business when I go to college so that one day I can take over her company.
ERRRR! That is NEVER going to happen. I hate business and everything that comes with doing it. The idea of one day running a multi billion dollar company and having hundreds of employees working for me sounds horrifying; well at least to me. I'm not about that life I'm more simple.
"You know even if I go with you today, it's not like I'm going to change my mind all of a sudden." I tell her.
"Well you don't know that." She remarked.
"Mom look, I'm not going to major in business. I'm going to major in math so that I can do what I love which is teaching." I say crossing my arms and taking a seat on the couch.
I sat there and looked and my mom. She ran a hand through her hair and took one deep breathe. I could tell she was frustrated with me and honestly I wouldn't blame her. It's been over a year that she's been trying to push me into majoring in business. And guess what? I'm still not convinced, nor will I ever be.
I would do anything for my mom except this is the one thing that I won't do for her. I get to decide what my life is going to be like for the next 30 years of my life; not her.
"You do realize that any other girl would kill to be in your position." She finally spoke. "I mean, Leah I'm basically handing over my company to you once you graduate from college." True I thought. "No one gets that chance Leah, no person fresh out of college get to say I'm the new president of one of the biggest company in the country and in the world!"
That's the one thing that I don't want in life. I don't need to own a company. That is way too much for me to handle. Not to mention everyone is watching your every move. One wrong decision could affect not just you but everyone that works for you, and that's too much.
"Why do you want me so badly to take over your company mom? Can't you find someone else to do it?"
"Someone else! Like who Leah?" She glared at me with shock and disbelief written all over her face, which I found really funny. But out of respect I held my smile back.
"You know I'm not your only child right?"
"Nooo really? I had no idea that I had more children, you know since I only went into labor like five times." She spoke very sarcastically to me, and this time I burst out laughing on the couch.
"Why are you laughing Leah!" She yelled at me and I still couldn't stop. She sat on the other couch and breathed in deeply again. After like five minutes I was finally stopping.
"Ok well let me see, there is Ethan, Caroline, Ben, and Lauren." I got up from the couch and walked over to where my mom was. I sat down next to her and wrapped my arm around her shoulder. "All you have to do is pick who will be your next president."
She laughed at me and then stood up. "Let me refresh your mind Leah. Ethan is a doctor and is working on becoming an owner of his own hospital. Caroline is a lawyer and is going to one day take over your father's law firms. Ben is an architect and runs his own company. Lauren is finishing school to major in fashion. ALL of them have a set career already, except you."
"Make Lauren quit fashion." I simply said
"I can't do that Leah it's her last year plus she has a job offer in New York." Fuck my life.
"You know what mom, fine I'll go with you to your company. But that doesn't mean that I'm going to change my mind." She finally smiled and hugged me then headed towards the door.
"Come on dear, we have a meeting today." She said as she opened the door.
Why me? She's already saying we have a business meeting. This is going to be a long day for me.
