III. Reinsurance

Zisheng is worried about Shao Shang. The stress of not knowing what happened to her father, the agony of knowing her family were in jail awaiting death was too much. She had fainted in his arms in the forest earlier. He wishes she didn't see the corpse of the dead. He was surrounded by death since his childhood, death was an old friend. Always present in his mind. But it was different for Niao Niao. She did grow up without love, but she was still happy and surrounded by life. He wanted her to live without hardship. But he had failed, he left her alone and this chaos had happened.

If he had stayed with her none of this would have happened. But he had insisted with the emperor to send him to war. Shao Shang had to fend for herself getting here to get proof of her family's innocence.

After she fainted, he took her in his arms and brought her to his horse. Carried her back to where they reside now. Once inside, he lays her gently on her bed. He stays for a while, stroking her face gently. Zisheng left her a few minutes to check on his men. Shao Shang was still deep asleep. He will come back quickly. He will not let her alone in this difficult time.

"How is the young Lady, young Lord?" asked A'Qi.

"Still asleep. Everything under control?" he asks his second in command. The man nods his head, "Yes, young Lord." Zisheng went back inside followed by his two servants. They stood guard in front of Shao Shang's room. He heard Shao Shang wake up with "Father." on her lips.

"Shao Shang." He said to her, while his fiancée sits up in the bed.

"Any news of my father?" She asks, her voice trembling.

"No, not yet. But we confirmed that he was not with the corpse we found in the forest."

Shao Shang stood up and went toward the door. Zisheng stopped her. "Let me go, I have to find my father!" she said, trying to escape his arms.

"Young Lady, do you know how many hours young Lord had you on his back. He didn't stop for water when he came back." Said A'Fei trying to reason with Shao Shang. His brother A'Qi told him "Shut up, A'Fei."

"I have to say something. Young Lord, when he heard of the problem your family had. He went by himself to conquer the Sonchun city and capture Peng Kun. He almost died in the process. When he finally escaped death, he quickly came to this county knowing you would come here. He hasn't properly slept in days to help you and your family. Can't you be a bit kinder to him?" said A'Fei in pain for his master.

"A'Qi, take him to be punished." Said Zisheng to his second-in-command.

"Yes." A'Qi took his brother away with many protests from the other man.

Zisheng and Shao Shang were finally alone together. Zisheng gently took her by both arms.

"Are you wounded? Is it serious? Let me see?" said Shao Shang looking at him worried.

Zisheng nods his head no "It's fine."

Shao Shang couldn't believe him. He never tells her when he is wounded. She had to check, she put her hand on his chest. Zisheng grabbed her hand gently to stop her. "It's fine. I'm not lying." He said, smiling at her.

He invites her to sit on the bed with him. "Peng Kun did try to kill me. But the chest armor you made me, protected me perfectly. The blade didn't get through. You saved me. "

Shao Shang lowered her head and looked up when she was ready to talk to him "You are my husband-to-be, you have to take better care of yourself. Even if you are risking your life for me." Her voice was sure when she said this to him. Zisheng is touched, his life didn't matter much before he met Shao Shang.

"When I heard you were in danger, I couldn't think about my life. I just want to go to you as fast as I can." He said to her softly. She looks disturb by his comments, like her life had never meant this much to anyone, not even her parents.
