CHAPTER 24: THE WHITE LION: JISUK YOO

Where did he—

A bold fist thrust into my side with unreal force. Something snapped inside of my body. In the midst of the force delayed punch, the numen at my fist dispersed from my hand and retreated back within the core.

It was in that hopeless moment of defeat and utter failure that my body, reacting to the force of Jisuk's own numen condensed fist, flew forward and crashed into the shed several meters away with enough impact for the steel wall to deeply dent.

My body slumped to the ground and went limp with weakness.

Barely keeping my eyes open from blacking out, I forced myself to stay awake with the self inflicted pain of my nails digging cruelly into my palm.

Blood seeped out from my hand and onto the ground.

I can't pass out now... this is pitiful...!

"You're not the only one who can move fast, you know." Jisuk's voice broke the slight trance I had entered.

He trudged toward me.

Lifting my eyes without the help of my head to where he neared, I realized with burning bitterness just how far he had knocked me.

"As you now know, my ability is wind. My wind isn't too distantly related to your speed, so I can use it to make myself just as quick as you." He continued forward, hands tucked back into his pockets.

I've gotta move...!

My bloodied fist, white-knuckled and shaky with pulsing pain moved to the ground beside my hip and set firmly to prepare me for my next move. My other hand followed suit.

"Except, I had this inkling feeling this entire time we've been fighting... I'm not entirely sure if your ability is actually speed... it feels different, somehow..."

Dragging my legs closer, I took a deep breath and waited for him to get closer.

The distance between us continued to close.

"Speed... what's a power that's similar to speed... hmm..." he ceased in his tracks for a moment. His head lulled to the side in thought.

I breathed, slowly and evenly to calm my pounding heart as I continued to watch.

Then, he shrugged and continued forward, "Speed... ah, wait, I think I got it! Its T—"

With a surging burst of power, I accelerated myself with numen and bolted to his side, successfully thrusting my fist into his diaphragm.

I hit him—!

His hand gripped my neck. Fist still dug into his stomach, he glared at me with stomach-churning lividness and raised his other hand to swing it at my face.

Accepting my defeat and tensing away from the hit, to my surprise, it never came.

his fist came to a dead halt just before it could land on my face. A gentle wisp of numenless wind followed after.

"You."

His hand on my neck loosened its grip slightly.

"Your leg is injured, right?"

"...what?"

"I saw you limping the other day. My guys. They did that, right?"

He didn't need my answer.

"Damn it..." silently cursing, he released his hold on my neck and paced around, running a hand through his hair.

"I'm not gonna fight someone who was already injured before this. I need to test your abilities at their best."

"...But I—"

"We'll continued this later, Jiwoo Seo. You're not strong enough." He gave me a long, hard look before shoving his hands bitterly into his pockets for the last time and walking away.

Just like that.

However, I still stood where I was, motionless and conflicted.

Another chill, gust of winter wind blew over me and tussled my hair and clothes, sending the cold straight to my bones.

But despite the cold, I never shivered.

Despite watching his figure disappear all so suddenly, I never moved, and I never spoke.

For a thought weighed heavily in my mind; one that crushed my will and left me with such bitter disdain for myself.

...But my leg...

...

...It's already recovered.

Another long, silent moment passed before I finally ambled forward and headed home.
