Lisa's POV

The first time I saw her, something inside me shifted. Admire her? No, that’s too weak a word. Like her? That’s probably closer. My heart raced in slow motion, an overwhelming rhythm that made my thoughts blur.

She’s Jennie Kim—the queen bee, the daughter of the university owner, and someone way out of my league. Still, I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about courting her. Sure, she had countless suitors, all rich and polished, but I wanted my approach to stand out.

While her other suitors bombarded her with extravagant gifts like bouquets of roses, expensive chocolates, and fancy cakes, I’d do something different. A single daisy. Handwritten cards filled with honest, heartfelt words. Home-cooked meals. Maybe even serenade her—if that’s still a thing.

I was lost in thought, imagining ways to win her over, when suddenly, she passed by my table. My eyes followed her automatically. She was breathtaking. It was no wonder she had so many admirers.

My daydream was cut short when someone spoke beside me.

“Hi?” a voice said, startling me.

“Huh?” I replied, blinking in confusion.

“Can I sit here? There’s no other seat available,” the girl asked, holding a tray of food and gesturing at the vacant seat across from me.

I looked around to confirm her claim, and she was right—every table was packed.

“Yeah, sure. You can sit here,” I said, motioning to the seat.

She nodded and settled down. I couldn’t help but notice how focused she was on her meal. She was devouring her chicken like it was the best thing she’d ever tasted. In no time, she had finished three chicken legs.

“Uh… hi? I’m Lisa,” I said, attempting to break the silence between us.

She looked up from her plate with a blank expression.

“Hi, I’m Jisoo,” she replied, giving me a small smile before returning to her food.

---

Over time, Jisoo and I became friends. We quickly grew comfortable with each other, maybe because we were both a little nerdy. We even started sharing secrets about our crushes.

Jisoo, as it turned out, had a crush on Rosie—one of Jennie’s closest friends. She described Rosie as someone who looked like a chipmunk and had a love for food. Honestly, I could see it. If those two ever got together, they’d definitely be the “foodie couple.”

Jisoo was obsessed with chicken, which I had guessed from our first meeting. And Rosie? She was always eating too, devouring chocolates and cakes like there was no tomorrow. Maybe that’s why Jisoo liked her—they shared a passion for food.

“What about you? Who’s your crush?” Jisoo asked one day, her mouth full of chicken as usual.

How much chicken does she eat in a day?

“Uh… the one with cat-like eyes and mandu cheeks,” I replied shyly, my face heating up. “I’m planning to court her.”

“Jennie Kim?” she asked, suddenly freezing mid-bite, her eyes locking on mine.

“Maybe? I don’t know her name yet,” I said, confused by her reaction.

Jisoo put her fork down and looked at me seriously. “Lisa, she’s… she’s the queen bee. She’s known for being savage. She has a ton of suitors, but none of them have ever gotten a ‘yes.’”

“So she’s never dated anyone?” I asked, confused.

“She entertains them, sure. But no one ever gets close enough to be her boyfriend. It’s like she’s playing a game—giving them hope, making them spend loads of money on gifts, and then brushing them off. Oh, and one more thing—she hates nerds like us.”

That last part hit me like a brick.

“She has high standards,” Jisoo continued. “The only one she really talks to is Kim Taehyung, the basketball captain. They hang out sometimes, but always with her friends around.”

I frowned. “Why does she hate nerds?”

“She just does,” Jisoo said with a sigh. “And honestly, Lisa, I don’t want to see you get hurt. Jennie will embarrass you. Last year, she humiliated a nerdy guy who tried to court her in front of the whole school. Since then, no nerd has dared to approach her.”

I stayed quiet, digesting her words.

“I’m not saying this to crush your hopes,” Jisoo added. “I just don’t want you to go through that kind of humiliation.”

“Thanks for worrying, Chicken,” I said, teasing her to lighten the mood.

“Chicken?” she repeated, frowning. “Did you just call me chicken?”

“Well, you love chicken, so yeah,” I said with a smirk.

“You stupid monkey,” she muttered under her breath, but I heard her loud and clear.

Monkey? Really?

“Anyway, Chicken,” I said again, ignoring her insult. “How do her suitors approach her?”

“They just give her gifts and show up around her. That’s it,” she said, shrugging.

“Do they ever talk to her?”

“Even if they do, she doesn’t really respond. She just ignores them,” Jisoo replied.

“Oh…” I trailed off, feeling my confidence waver.

“You still want to court her?” Jisoo asked, her voice filled with concern.

“Yeah,” I said firmly, meeting her gaze.

Jisoo sighed heavily, shaking her head. “Monkey, she’s going to crush you. She doesn’t like nerds. Her suitors may not all be as famous as Taehyung, but they have style, money, and confidence. That’s why she lets them stick around. People like us? We don’t stand a chance.”

Her words stung, but I couldn’t let them discourage me. Jennie might be out of reach, but I’d never know unless I tried.
