Revna Kjartansdottir had been hoping for her fathers downfall for as long as she could remember. He was cruel, and angry, and treated her as if she was nothing. Her entire childhood, her mother told her to keep her head down, to do as she was told, and everything would be fine. Then one day, her mother disappeared, and it broke Revna in a way she did not know she could be broken. For a year after, all Revna had was her anger, and her hatred. She had no one, until she meets a young boy only a year older than her when they were both punished to sleep in the stables one night. It's the first time she meets Sihtric, her half-brother, and it heals something inside of her, just a bit.
Revna is eleven the first time Sihtric gives her a blade, and it changes her life forever. She takes to fighting quickly, and exceptionally, becoming so good that not even her hateful father can overlook it. Over the years, Sihtric and Revna plot ways they could kill their father, but there is no way out for either of them, at least not one that lets both of them live. And then Sihtric is assigned to a group of men that will be sent to kill Uhtred Ragnarsson, and they finally have a chance. Uhtred and the siblings want the same thing – Kjartan dead – and so a plan is put into action. Sihtric leaves, promising to come back for her, and it feels like their fates are sealed.
Revna has never sworn an oath to anyone, has never had any kind of unconditional loyalty to anyone other than her brother. But then Uhtred storms Dunholm with his brother, and she is free. After that, the choice to follow him is an easy one, though it changes her life entirely. If Revna wishes to survive the new path destiny has set her on, she will have to become someone else. She will have to become something else.
