Once Neteyam got his fish, Tawn swam to another part of the reef to find others. She focused on a fish and immediately shot the spear into it. She swam towards the lifeless fish and put it into her fishing basket, ensuring the lid was closed.
They spent their morning hunting and collecting crustaceans and scallops for dinner. The both of them swam upwards with big smiles on their faces.
"Tawn! This is the most fish I ever got!" Neteyam grinned, bringing his share of hunts up in the air for the woman to see.
"Congratulations Neteyam!" she said genuinely, her eyes shining with pride, "okay, let's go call our ilus now," she said, slinging her bag on her shoulders and making the clicking sounds.
Two ilus swam towards them, chirping along and positioning themselves in front of the two.
Tawn held onto her ilu before feeling her breath get knocked out of her lungs, and a force pushed her body back away from Neteyam. Time seemed to move in slow motion. She felt a burn on her back from the harsh impact of the water. She tried to gasp for air but ended up swallowing the water. Her vision was hazy, and she was disoriented.
She tried to regain her balance, constantly blinking her eyes to make her view clearer. Once she was okay, she looked around for Neteyam. She was still drowsy from the brutal impact of the water, but she couldn't dwell on it. Neteyam was still not safe.
Tawn then noticed Neteyam falling slowly into the dark abyss. She swam, pushing through her drowsy state. When he was at arm's length, Tawn pulled him towards her with all her might, seconds before an akula swam straight towards them.
The ripple from its tail pushed both of them back.
Tawn let out a groan of frustration, swimming far enough away from the colossal predator. Noticing a massive coral reef, she pulled the both of them towards it, dragging him onto it and then pushing his chest multiple times.
"Oh, Eywa, please help me," she cried. She did CPR on the boy, constantly muttering his name and bending down tooming from his mouth. She couldn't do this to the Sullys, they lost their mother, and it'd break them if they lost Neteyam. Jake wouldn't have his oldest son and his wife. hear anything c
She didn't stop her movement until Neteyam coughed out the water in his lungs. Tawn pushed him to the side, helping him clear his airways. "Oh, thank you, Eywa!" she cried in relief. She rubbed the boy's back to soothe his coughing. "Let it all out, Neteyam. You are okay. You are safe," she eased.
When he stopped coughing, Tawn placed him on his back once more and waited for him to open his eyes.
After a few seconds, she watched with relief as Neteyam's eyes shot open before he sat up and looked around agitatedly.
Neteyam finally looked at her. His gaze was frantic, looking at her face. Tawn noticed his eyes glossed over, and a feeling of sadness overcame her.
"Oh Neteyam, you are okay, ma yawntutsyip," Tawn cooed, bringing Neteyam in her embrace. She tucked his head on her neck and rubbed his back soothingly. They were moments away from their death. If Tawn had acted slowly, Eywa knew how it could've ended. She knew he was still in shock.
Tawn hummed a song to calm him down, and then she felt something wet on her neck not long after. Her heart broke even more, "Neteyam, you are okay now. Let's go back, okay? I'll call my Tsurak so we can go quickly." She said.
Neteyam's head shook violently, his arms wrapped around Tawn tightly.
"Okay, then, but we need to go back eventually," she sighed, wrapping her arms around the boy again.
