My first interview for an internship outside of school was at a small publishing firm in decatur georgia. We were in the middle of a recession and nobody was getting work. I can remember all my classmates sending resumes and not getting any work.
I can remember long lines at the professor's offices from students wanting to get references. Imagine that, you expect that some guy who coudn't get a job int he real world saying you are a great guy becuase you do the busywork of academia well is going to help you get a job?
I knew that folks in the real world want referecnes from real world people. So I talked to a couple of colelge classmates who had relatives in the real world of business. I didn't ask them if they had any openings. I remember this mildly intelligent sophomore who was in my math course. I found out that his father owned a small publishing firm. I asked him out for coffee. One of the great things about being an attractive woman is that men will fall over themvselvse trying to get close to you.
Within five minutes, I can tell if I can get what I want by touching, kissing, sucking, or screwing. This guy was one who hadn't had a woman so all I had to do was hint at what he might get if he took me over to the business. Wthin a couple of weeks I got a couple of interviews this way.
They run you thorugh five or six interviews at that company. Of the five interviews, only one or two matter. The rest are fluff. Yeah they ask you what you think, but they don't care. I went to the first interview and found a stern straight laced woman who was wanting to talk to me. This woman you could tell worked 80 hour workweeks and had no life outside the office. Probably hadn't had a good screw in 10 years. And of course she gave me the run around. "Becky, you really have to work hard if you are going to break through the old boys club like I did." She said.
Her office was a mess demonstrating two things. First, that she worked hard. And the second thing it demonstrated is that she doesn't care enough about appearances to ever get anywhere. I shook her hand and tried to get out. She ended the conversation with, "If you make it in, I will fight for you." Maybe she would, maybe she woudn't. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what she fights for. I shook her hand and went in to the next interview.
This was a guy with a big title who was always looking at my skirt. I knew imediately he was attracted to me. I coudn't tell if he was anybody though. I looked over on the table and saw a picture of a middle aged family. A 15 year old girl and 8 year old boy and two parents in their mid 40s. He was the manager of the project that they were looking to staff for. The guy looked like he hadn't seen a woman under 30 except on websites.
He asked a few pointless questions while stealing glances at me. He is not the kidn of guy that I would be interested in in any way, but hey, he was a manger. I "accidentally" slid by him and touched his arm. he quickly turned, probably to hide a growing erection that he will probably take care of while thinking of me later.
Then I had the interview with the owner of the company. He was a 55 year old man. I knew he was divorced and that he had very little life. I touched his arm and saw no response whatsoever. I looked and saw that he was in great shape for a 55 year old man. I immediately began calculating, I would do whatwever it dook to get this job. "Hello Becky, now why do you want to work here." He asked.
I turned to try to give him a look and saw that he didn't even glance. "Well as you can see, I come highly recommended by your nephew. I am a hard worker and want to prove myself." Yeah I was laying on the crap thick.
"Well my nephew is easily distracted. I didn't get where I am by being distracted." He said. It wasn't long before I found out that I was born with the wrong equipment to seduce that man. So he saw through my crap. We talked for a few more minutes and then he shook my hand and led me out of the office. I never heard from him and I didn't get the job. Although the guys nephew kept calling me, but what could that guy do for me? Interestingly enough, the 45 year old middle manager hooked me up with a friend he had in another company.
He thought I was going to "reward him," but one thing I knew early on is that you pay for things want, you don't pay for what you already got. I saw that guy about five years later at an interview I was giving. His eyes widened when he saw it was me. He thought I was going to hook him up for what he did for me. Needless to say, he didn't get the job, I ain't got no time for a inconsequential pervert.
